Fyshwick is getting its very own Burlesque venue (and it’s just one of two brand-new dance studios from Subsdance)

That’s right—here to encourage a slightly spicier side of life, Fyshwick is getting its very own after-dark dance studio for adults, offering a safe place for the Canberra community to explore their sensuality and identity.
Moonlight Studio (the sister to Sunlight Studio) is a part of a glow-up currently being undertaken by Subsdance Dance Studio—Canberra’s beloved haven for fun, fitness, and performance—seeing the business leave Kingston and expand to two new locations.
Opening in Phillip and Fyshwick on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 January (with the official term starting Monday 30 January), the Moonlight and Sunlight Studio hubs will offer a range of classes for all abilities, ages, and interests.
And the owner of Subsdance, Charlie Wan, couldn’t be more excited.
“The evolution of Subsdance has been incredible for me to watch. From when I first took over the business in 2019, I realised that there are very distinct areas of business,” she says.
“So in Phillip, we have our Sunlight Studio and the idea behind that is styles that happen in the sunshine. That’s our vibrant, joyful styles and a lot of our world styles are there.”

Offering everything from Afro Beats, Reggaeton, Caburlesque, Sass and Booty, as well as fitness classes like Zumba, the Sunlight Studio will also be branching out into kids’ classes for any mini dancers looking to get their groove on. And that’s not all.
Partnering with The AR Pixels, Subsdance Sunlight Studio will also be offering kids, family, and maternity photoshoots.
But for those looking to spice up their night, the Moonlight Studio will see classes like Drag, StripperFIT, Chair and Heels, After Dark, Burlesque, and more bring immaculate vibes and adult themes to Fyshwick (not that it needed more).
“We’re even starting up a lap dance class! It’s really going to be a safe space where people can explore their confidence, sensuality, and a different side of their identity on their own terms,” says Charlie.
“There are other studios that do adult burlesque, but we definitely focus on the core of building people’s confidence and allowing people to explore without feeling judged. The more spaces we have like that, the better.”

The Moonlight Studio will also be home to a brand-new entertainment venue, fully equipped to host shows, parties, boudoir photo, and video shoots, and much, much more.
And for those who are interested in trying either Sunlight or Moonlight (and are worried they don’t have a coordinated bone in their body), both studios are holding open days where you can try their welcoming classes for free—and don’t worry, while the spaces aren’t 100 per cent wheelchair accessible, they’re working towards it (and you’re welcome to contact the team to find out more).
HerCanberra readers are also in for a little treat: whether you enjoy Sunlight or want to dance in Moonlight, Subsdance is offering a 15 per cent saving on Term Passes at the open days when you share the code HERCBR—and it can be used at both venues.
“What I hope for the Canberra community is Subsdance can continue being a space that helps people’s lives day-to-day,” says Charlie.
“Now across two locations, we have something that people can just go to and it’s not some big, loud, life-changing event every time. It’s just a safe space for them, and people know we’re going to be consistently there. Even as we go through our evolutions, we remain the same.”
