Struggling to find your zen and thinking ‘namaste in bed’?

Well I am here, bending over backwards to show you some amazing ways to stay fit, healthy and mindful this New Year.

Ready to get back into yoga or keen to try it for the first time? Canberra is home to many wonderful studios offering a variety of classes for all skill levels and abilities, not to mention some very unique ways to do your downward dog.

Float Yoga

Swap your yoga mat for a stand-up paddleboard on the water to strengthen and stretch your body with Float Yoga. A low impact workout, float yoga aims to strengthen and focus the mind and body as you try and keep those toes out of the water.

Joga Yoga was established in 2017 and has flourished here in the Capital as it combines traditional yoga practices with a modern twist. Jo the founder of Joga Yoga holds her weekly yoga classes on stand- up paddleboards or SUPs at Manuka Pool and pop up classes throughout the year on Lake Burley Griffin.

Joga Yoga is also running a pop up free yoga class in the city until March 29 on Tuesday and Thursdays. Open to all skill levels you can join Jo in Latin America Plaza to stretch, centre and revitalise yourself this summer.

Mindful Yoga

here.’s Downer studio is a calm, warm cocoon of mindfulness. With yoga classes incorporating functional movement and mindful cues to achieve a moving meditation, here is for those yogis wanting to be completely grounded in their practice.

Based on a vinyasa flow framework you will seamlessly move through sequences that challenge your strength and flexibility, there is a focus on postural alignment and connection to breath, keeping you present throughout the class.

Pilates and Barre

If you’re looking for a free-flowing form of exercise that is a little more upbeat from yoga, I highly recommend Pilates or Barre.

Pilates aims to build strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture. With an emphasis on form rather than working towards a workout burn Pilates uses a variation of exercises. Pilates uses the entire body as you strengthen and stretch. The process requires concentration to master and define each move.

Barre (noun: pronounced ‘BAR’ as in “after this workout, I am going to get a cocktail at the bar”)

This trendy form of exercise focuses on mindful movement as it incorporates Yoga and Pilates into a ballet style class to build strength, flexibility and posture.

With the use of small weights, full body motion and holding yourself up while continuing small movements of the body, Barre will keep you on your toes, literally.

Canberra has a variety of studio across the capital with Pilates and Barre workshops and classes daily:
