This aesthetic clinic in Canberra is empowering women’s health (by treating the things we don’t talk about)

When you think of wellness and some of the treatments that go with it—like micro-needling to boost collagen production—your vagina might not be the very first area to come to mind.

But (just like your skin), sometimes it needs a little bit of extra love, especially when dealing with bodily issues that make your life more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

That’s why The R Clinic in Belconnen has become the first aesthetic clinic in Canberra (and one of the first in Australia) to offer the services of the EmpowerRF device, delivering life-changing women’s wellness therapies.

First opening its doors in 2023, the women-lead team wanted to bring the new wellness technology to the capital for one simple reason: they strongly believe that there should be a focus on the long-neglected issues women suffer from—including incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, and sexual dysfunction, and post-menopausal vaginal symptoms

“I’ve seen lots of women with concerns like these and traditionally in the past these women would see their GPs, women’s physios, and surgeons for further assistance,” says Dr. Melanie Sung.

“And if women want more help, they don’t want to use medications, or have surgery, there is really nothing available that exists elsewhere in Canberra like EmpowerRF, where it offers a combination of technology to target women’s wellness.”

Dr. Melanie Sung.

Officially launching Femme Aesthetics by The R Clinic to give women more options to treat their health concerns, Melanie says the hope is by offering the comprehensive, non-surgical, and non-invasive platform, the clinic will start to help to break the stigma around feminine health in Canberra.

”This is not about the aesthetic appearance—it’s about restoring and rehabilitating the lives of women experiencing uncomfortable and not often-talked-about symptoms post-childbirth and menopause,” says Melanie.

“Lots of women have a lot of concerns about these issues but they don’t talk about it…In particular it’s post-menopausal women with a number of  vaginal symptoms and the other group is the younger women—especially post birth with pelvic floor weakness, incontinence, or diastasis recti.”

After a screening is done by one of the females doctors at The R Clinic, each client receives a personalised recommendation on how or if EmpowerRF can help with  their concerns

And while anything involving needles (especially intravaginally) might sound scary, Melanie promises that it’s not painful, there’s no need for general anaesthesia and there is minimal to no downtime—perfect for starting your journey for improving your physical, sexual, and mental health.

“Women’s wellness has always been neglected in a way…we need to be able to talk about it she says.

“This might not suit everyone, but it offers people more options for women, in addition to medications, exercises, and surgery”

With the strong belief that this technology can positively change the lives of women throughout Canberra, in collaboration with INMODE, The R Clinic has started an Australian first women’s wellness initiative to help improve the quality of life of women.

Calling for Canberra women aged in their 30s and 40s who have given birth and are suffering symptoms of weak pelvic floor muscles, urinary incontinence, and/or sexual dysfunction, as well as post-menopausal women suffering from genitourinary syndrome to participate, all patients will receive over 10 heavily subsidised treatments over a three-month period.

It might not be something we often talk about, but “down there” deserves as much attention and pampering as the rest of our bodies—especially when the treatments can only improve your quality of life.
