How one Canberra psychology practice is reducing wait times

Canberra’s Strategic Psychology is focusing on a new booking model designed to streamline the path to mental health support.
Prioritising your mental health is an important step, but finding a psychologist with immediate availability isn’t always easy. According to a healthcare index survey by the Australian Psychological Society, almost two-thirds of patients are waiting more than 12 weeks to receive care.
The team at Canberra’s Strategic Psychology wanted to address this scheduling barrier. Managing Director and Principal Psychologist Nesh Nikolic says that by adjusting traditional booking systems and rethinking clinic operations, the practice has focused on improving appointment availability.
“We shifted our model to upfront payments a few years ago, and this administrative change significantly reduced late cancellations and no-shows, meaning slots remain available for those seeking care,” Nesh says.
“It allows for a more equitable system where clients usually secure their first appointment within one to two weeks, with our live booking system reflecting availability in real-time.”

Securing an initial appointment is only the first step; finding a practitioner who aligns with your specific needs is equally important. To assist with this process, the practice has introduced an online “Match with a psychologist” tool on their website.
“Clients can complete a brief questionnaire detailing their preferences and primary areas of concern, such as anxiety or low mood,” Nesh says.
“The system then suggests clinicians within the practice who possess relevant experience or interests in those areas.”
The team of 25 psychologists provides care across various life stages, welcoming children, adults, couples, and families. They also offer structured assessments for ADHD, autism, and specific learning differences.

Nesh notes that clients seek support for a wide range of everyday experiences, from workplace stress and relationship transitions to navigating family dynamics or feeling socially disconnected.
“Our team includes practitioners with a broad range of experience, with several clinicians having practised therapy for over two decades,” Nesh says.
While you don’t need a referral to make an appointment, individuals can visit their GP to determine eligibility for a Mental Health Treatment Plan to access Medicare rebates.

Nesh notes that the stigma surrounding mental health has shifted in recent years.
“We have seen a positive shift in how people view mental health, with individuals feeling more comfortable reaching out for support when they need it,” he says.
“General Practitioners play a vital role in this by actively supporting mental wellbeing and connecting patients with appropriate care.”
Treatment durations are tailored to individual and clinical needs, ranging from focused strategies to long-term support.
“We offer sessions delivered either face-to-face in our office in the heart of the city, or via telehealth, ensuring that accessing support is as straightforward as possible,” Nesh says.
