Yeah…it’s going to be a busy month.
The last month of winter is finally here (hooray!) and there are plenty of opportunities to get out and about this August.

Egyptian Winter Feast
If you are dreaming of a sumptuous foodie escape to a vibrant faraway place, look no further. Inspired by its blockbuster exhibition Discovering Ancient Egypt, the National Museum of Australia is creating an exclusive, one-night-only culinary and cultural experience.

WIRED
The Training Ground, a Canberra-based dance studio helmed by Bonnie Neate and Suzy Piani, presents WIRED – an original full-length contemporary dance work based on a true story.
Telling the story of an individual who consciously decided to live in the walls and ceiling of a family home to facilitate a ghost-like and unnerving experience for the home’s occupants, the original story has been deconstructed to reveal a modern account of the original narrative, exploring themes of deception, mistrust, and paranoia. Following the critically-acclaimed and award-winning productions Unveiled (2021), Unravel (2022) and Unhinged (2023), WIRED is the fourth full-length contemporary dance work from The Training Ground.

Essential Tremors
Essential Tremors is a unique exploratory music and art series supporting local and international creators navigating the boundless nature of sound.
Curated by Angus Andrew of Liars, the series originated at Phoenix Central Park in Sydney, 2022 with an all-Australian line-up. Since then, ET has expanded with iterations in Beijing, NYC, Tokyo, Akron and Canberra. Don’t miss the with deep expressive performances from Hantu (Narrm) and Sally Golding (Ngunnawal Country). Hughes Repair Café
Have something that needs to be fixed? This fun, hands-on event is what you need.
Whether it’s a wonky toaster or a wobbly chair, bring in your broken items and learn how to fix them with the help of their skilled volunteers. Not only will money be saved by fixing things instead of replacing them, but waste will also be reduced! Plus, for plant lovers, there will be a gardening mentoring session held at the same time.

TEDxCanberra Youth 2024: Stars

Olympics and Paralympics LIVE Watch Parties at the AIS
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) will host two watch parties, as Canberra’s live site for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The free events will take place at the family friendly time of 10 am to 2 pm and be the first opportunity for Canberrans to visit the newly refurbished AIS Arena. Both events will feature big screens for attendees to watch the Games, a range of activities from local sports, food trucks galore and plenty of kid’s entertainment. You’ll also be able to take a quiz with the French Embassy, meet Olympians and Paralympians and enjoy complementary site tours and admission to Sportex, the AIS’ interactive sports exhibit.

The event is open to all students and adults looking for advice and information on current and future employment and career options through apprenticeships, study and employment.

Fired Up Winter Festival
This is Canberra Potters’ annual winter festival celebrating Canberra’s ceramics community. It promises an enchanting evening under the winter night sky, where visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant world of ceramics and connect through clay in the heart of Canberra.
You can discover your creativity through a variety of pre-booked clay experiences, resident artists will open their studios doors, and professional potters will give demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Food and drinks will also be available to purchase from selected vendors, and visitors are invited to buy handmade bowls and have them filled with delicious homemade soup for free!

Trophy Boys
A queer black comedy and drag extravaganza about power, privilege, and high school debating, this indie theatre piece is performed by a female and non-binary cast in drag as it looks at (and interrogates) insecure adolescent masculinity, entitlement and the ego of Australia’s next generation of politicians and powerbrokers.
An amazing debut play from Emmanuelle Mattana, watch as the all-boys team from the elite St Imperium college gets ready to annihilate their sister school rivals at the Grand Finale of the Year 12 Inter-school Debating Tournament. Some Like It Marilyn
This isn’t a biographic, but a film-o-graphic. Looking at the life of Marylin Monroe was through her work, this cabaret show is perfect for anyone that loves Marylin.

Variety Is Back, Baby
Wild Voices Music Theatre is a voice and piano studio based in Dickson, where students aged from eight years to their 70s are studying music.

He Died With A Felafel In His Hand

From one of our nation’s most innovative dance theatre companies, Jurrungu Ngan-ga (translated from Yawuru as ‘straight talk’) confronts Australia’s shameful fixation with incarceration, taking inspiration from the words and experiences of Yawuru leader Patrick Dodson, Kurdish-Iranian writer and former Manus Island detainee Behrouz Boochani, and Iranian-Australian scholar-activist Omid Tofighian. Connecting the shockingly disproportionate levels of Indigenous Australians in custody and the indefinite detention of asylum seekers in Australia’s immigration detention centres, the performance blends movement, music, soundscape, spoken word and projection to draw on cultural and community experience, moving between horrific surrealism, truth-telling and stunning physicality.

Choir of King’s College, Cambridge

Magnificat
In Magnificat, the Luminescence singers join forces with Aperion Baroque to trace the musical lineage of baroque composers.
Presenting gems from the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque era, and paying homage to the composers of the Ospedali Schools of Venice, where young singers studied under the tutelage of Italy’s finest musicians. Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells In Concert
Following its successful sold-out 50th Anniversary run in the UK & Europe, Tubular Bells in Concert is now heading to Canberra for a not-to-be-missed show.

Cobi Cockburn is a celebrated contemporary Australian artist, who sis known for her large wall panels and installations that use shifting tonal linework, that connect and respond to the gallery’s architecture.

Peter Boggs – The Memory Of Place Paintings
This exhibition explores the notion of beauty in landscape through glimpses of Italian scenes, not explicitly revealed but drawn from recollections of Peter Boggs experiences over the years.
Throughout Peter’s career, he has been captivated by the mysterious qualities of light and in this exhbition he skillfully constructs his dream-like compositions through delicate tonal layering of oil paint.

In this exhibition, Benjamin Edols and Kathy Elliott display their technical skills in glass, capturing the cool tones of the coastal landscape.
From the movements of the ocean and sky distilled in their exquisite blown and carved glass forms, this synergy of ideas and collaborative approach to glass making, combined with their extraordinary skills, are revealed in this beautiful exhibition.

Chinoiserie – Jennifer Manning and The Thursday Group
Have no idea what Chinoiserie is? It’s a western decorative style in art, furniture and architecture characterized by the use of Chinese motifs and techniques.
Working with 15 students to explore Chinese decoration, Jenny Manning (a multimedia artist, who paints, prints, draws, knits and makes baskets) has created an exhbition celebrating their colourful works.

Hanging By A Thread – Mosaics For Afghan Women
Part of the Hanging by a Thread project, this project aims to raise awareness of the plight of Afghan women and girls and involves over 1,200 experienced and amateur mosaic artists from 46 countries.
Brining together mosaics from SA, VIC, NSW, QLD, TAS, WA and New Zealand undertaken by communities during the 2022 International Year of Glass, each artist has made a small segment of glass mosaic, which is being joined together to create a series of giant scarfs.

Self Portrait in the Anthropocene
Presented by artist Rebecca Selleck, Self Portrait in the Anthropocene combines curved stainless-steel furniture with intricate bronze work, blown glass, living plants and bodily upholsteries.
This exhibition is a showcase of the artists creation of dissonant spaces that explore our increasing destruction of natural environments and the inherent hypocrisies of being human.

Five Dresses for a Wari Goddess
This exhibition explores colour, materiality and iconography in fashion through an Andean lens.
Artist Ximena Briceño has created five dresses crafted from titanium, aluminum and cardboard using camelids as a main form of decoration, showcasing Trans-Pacific craft and skill.

Chasing Clouds
Jonathon Zalakos is a contemporary jewellery and object maker based in Canberra. In this exhibition he employs motifs of cloud-like abstraction, utilising silver inlay on steel to create representational relief work as externalised models of the unconscious in a modern context.

Canberra MS Mega Swim
This is a fun, team relay event, where swimmers are sponsored by friends, family and colleagues to freestyle, backstroke, butterfly or doggy-paddle for 24 hours, whilst raising vital funds to support people living with MS.

Nam Le: 36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem
Join author and poet Nam Le as he discusses his book ’36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem’ with local Canberra author and Artistic Director of the Canberra Writers Festival, Beejay Silcox.
This book-length poem is an urgent, unsettling reckoning with identity and the violence of identity, embedded with racism, oppression and historical trauma. But it also addresses the violence in those assumptions – of being always assumed to be outside one’s home, country, culture or language. And the complex violence, for the diasporic writer who wants to address any of this, of language itself. Following the discussion in the Theatre, Nam Le will be available for book signings in the Foyer.
