10 Things Every Canberra Newbie Should Know
Posted on
It’s that time of year that sees an influx of newbies to Canberra.
Whether you’re a student, diplomat, or professional making the move to Canberra, here are 10 essential things you need to know about your new home.
1. We love to welcome fresh faces
You’re not alone in being new – Canberra has a large transient population including international students, diplomats, and politicians. This means locals are used to welcoming fresh faces, and there’s always someone else finding their feet. The good thing is that Canberrans love to show newbies the ropes – and soon you’ll love this city as much as we do!
2. We’re a city of seasons

Canberra experiences four distinct seasons – and everyone has their favourite. Summers are usually dry and hot, winters are properly cold with frosty mornings, autumn explodes in red and gold, and spring brings a riot of colourful blooms (not to mention hectic hay fever). Don’t be fooled by the “fake spring” in August – keep those warm clothes handy until October.
3. Location, Location, Location
One of Canberra’s biggest perks is its strategic position. You’re just over two hours from both pristine beaches and snow fields. The South Coast offers beautiful swimming spots, while the Snowy Mountains provide excellent winter sports opportunities. It’s the perfect base for weekend adventures.
4. We’re a 20-minute city

In Canberra, you’ll be able to reach everyday essentials and services within a 20-minute walk or bike ride from anywhere in the city which has been designed with distinct town centres (Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong, Weston Creek, and Gungahlin) radiating from the central hub of Civic. There’s an extensive public transport system of buses and light rail, though most Canberrans find a car handy to get around. The good news? Traffic is minimal, parking is generally easy, and there’s an excellent network of bike paths.
5. We’re Australia’s cultural capital
As the nation’s capital, Canberra houses Australia’s most important cultural institutions. But the National Gallery, War Memorial, Parliament House (and a dozen other must-visits) are not just tourist attractions – they’re your local treasures, often with free entry. You might be surprised at the family-friendly entertainment you’ll find within their walls.
6. We love our food and drink

There is always something new happening in Canberra’s food scene, which ranges from casual family-owned cafes to award-winning fine dining restaurants. Fresh food markets operate throughout the week, and there’s a thriving coffee culture with local roasters gaining national recognition. We’re also getting quite the name for high-quality wine, craft beer and spirits!
7. We’re a smart city
Canberra is Australia’s most educated city, with five universities and an excellent public and private school system. Our unique college system for Years 11-12 offers students greater independence and specialised course selection. Moving here with school-aged children? Government schools have strict enrolment zones, so choose your suburb carefully.
8. Yes, it gets cold here.
Prepare for temperature extremes! While locals joke about not turning on heaters until Anzac Day (25 April), don’t feel bound by this tradition. Winters can be freezing, but the compensation is beautiful crisp days and clear blue skies. We have one word for you: layers.
9. We have you sorted for retail therapy

Most suburbs have their own local shops for basics, while major town centres offer larger shopping complexes. Markets are weekend highlights and are held across the city. Head to Fyshwick and Majura Park for outlet shopping, furniture, and homewares, while specialty shopping districts like Braddon, Kingston, and Manuka are packed with stylish boutiques.
10. Canberra Quirks
Some local peculiarities: you can’t hail cabs on the street (book ahead!), there are countless roundabouts (you’ll get used to them), and locals have their own pronunciation for places like Manuka (Marn-ah-ka). The city runs on a unique rhythm with Parliamentary sitting weeks bringing extra bustle to town.
While some take days to fall in love with Canberra and others take years, our planned city has a way of winning over even the most sceptical newcomers with its blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. Trust us – there are so many of us who came here for ‘just a couple of years’ and have never left.
