A Mexican mini market, Mexican and Latin DJs and more: Canberra is holding its own Day of the Dead Fiesta

Posted on

With festivities ranging from wrestling to face painting, this Day of the Dead Fiesta in Canberra isn’t one to miss!

Because it might be a dedication to the deceased, but there will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy. Taking place on Saturday 16 November at the Harmonie German Club, this authentic Mexican event has been carefully put together by Mexicans and features Mexican performers.

Honouring their cultural roots, the event is based on the annual Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico – a tradition that combines the ancient Aztec custom of celebrating ancestors with All Souls’ Day, (a holiday that Spanish invaders brought to Mexico starting in the early 1500s). Running two shows across the day (a family show starting at 4 pm and an adult show starting at 8 pm), the event will feature traditional ceremonies, thrilling performances and celebrate the rich heritage of Mexico.

Want to know what’s on? The family-friendly event is jam-packed with many activities, beginning with an Aztec Ceremony led by an Aztec Shaman performing a cleansing ritual and an opening ceremony, setting the tone for an evening filled with culture and fun festivities.

A traditional altar will also be available for guests to pay tribute to their departed loved ones. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos in honour of those who are being celebrated. And then, as the event goes on, the evening will also feature one of the most anticipated events: the thrilling Mexican Wrestling Show packed with acrobatics, action and comedy.

As for the adults show? Prepare for a night filled with Mexican and Latin DJs, live music including MARIACHI, a lively photo booth and plenty of tequila.

Attendees are also highly encouraged to dress up in their finest Day of the Dead attire and makeup. With face painters on hand to help attendees achieve their desired looks, there is a $500 prize for the best dressed (it is a costume celebration after all!).

If that’s not enough, the event also includes a Mexican mini market with authentic handicrafts from Mexico and a selection of Mexican street food from the top Mexican restaurants in Australia. Refreshing margaritas and other Mexican beverages will be available to complement the delicious cuisine.

If you’re looking for an unfiltered authentic Mexican experience head down to the Harmonie German Club for two fun fiestas! This celebration offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Mexico, making it a must-attend event for anyone seeking a genuine and unforgettable experience.
