YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON IN CANBERRA THIS WEEKEND! Every Monday for more than eight…
Showcasing a bevvy of local burlesque talent, The Apprentease is coming to Canberra on Saturday 19 June.
One of Australia’s freshest burlesque events, The Apprentease is coming to Canberra to showcase emerging and established local talent and no, it will have nothing to do with a certain orange-skinned shouty man.
An Australia-wide competition that showcases and recognises local burlesque talent, The Apprentease was created by A’dora Derriere and Sugar Duchess and will be produced for Canberra audiences by local burlesque superstar Jazida, Winner of Adelaide Fringe Festival award for Best Dance and founder of Flazeda Hub.
Taking place in the heritage-listed Ainslie Arts Centre at Gorman House on Saturday 19 June, burlesque performers of all stripes will compete in an open level contest for the Burlesque Excellence Award, mentorship and prizes from sponsors. Jazida says audiences can expect one heck of a show.
“Everyone is bringing such different acts,” she says. “There are bits of comedy, chair dancing, feather fans, boas, fun characters, and magnificent costumes.”
“We’ll also have a great guest MC from Sydney (Mac Galleon), a guest singer from Melbourne (Lady Fox), and world famous guest performer (Kelly Ann Doll) as judge from Sydney—you might even catch her sharing one of her iconic performances at the close of the night. All the competitors will perform, while the judges score and a winner will be announced a the end.”
Jazida is excited to bring Canberra’s burlesque community together after a year filled with online performances and restrictive venue numbers. However she’s quick to add that 2020 also brought the question of accessibility to the forefront.
She also adds that it will be a special night because “burlesque is such a fun and empowering artform that celebrates women no matter who they are or what they look like.”
“The Apprentease aims to strengthen our wonderful burlesque community through education, celebration, and industry support and it’s great seeing that happening in Canberra.”
“It’s so great to be back with real audiences and feeling that wonderful swell of community and being all together. But lockdown has definitely made a lasting impact…I realised what a huge difference livestreaming during lockdown made to people people (particular around accessibility—young mums, people with disabilities, people in regional areas started writing to me saying how thankful they were to be able to access the shows), so that’s something we are going to keep on doing!
That means that The Apprentease will be livestreamed to everyone watching at home via video link.
