Three Australian films not to miss at the Capital Film Festival

Posted on

There’s something magical about cinematic escapism—the evolutionary urge to scoff down as much of that perfectly salted popcorn as possible.

The childlike excitement of the lights dimming and the curtains moving just-so to reveal the big screen. Surrendering yourself to the beauty of visual storytelling.

The Capital Film Festival is bringing us that feeling of transcendence. In the hands of Australian filmmakers, these three films will transport us into their reality, and momentarily, away from ours.

6 Festivals: Macario De Souza

Shot across some of Australia’s biggest music festivals, this beautiful and insightful film explores what it’s like to be a teenager in the festival scene. Its rich imagery captures the feeling of Australian air, thick with sweat, iconic bands and lost youth.

We are taken into the world of three teens who try to find themselves in a crowd of a people—a raw and captivating portrait of just how fragile those early years of adulthood are. Not to mention a soundtrack featuring Peking Duk, Dune Rats and G Flip that will provide your music festival fix without the blisters and dehydration along the way.

Want to know the best bit? You can head along to a Q&A screening to chat with Macario De Souza about this love letter to young friendship and the life-altering power of live music.

6:30 pm Saturday 25 June (Q&A screening) and 2:15 pm Sunday 26 June | Tickets here

Bosch and Rockit: Tyler Atkins

This bitterly funny coming-of-age film explores the complex relationship between Rocket and his father Bosch. It’s bold and apologetically Australian, making you laugh and cry simultaneously.

It’s a very moving piece of filmmaking that explores the complicated push and pull of a tangled father and his plucky son within the landscape of coastal Australia.

It’s an honest reflection of messy love and how at times, that’s the kind of love that can overcome it all. Starring Luke Hemsworth and up and coming pro surfer Ramus King, this compelling debut feature is worth leaving the warmth of your house for.

Lonesome: Craig Boreham

Lonesome is a much-needed exploration of the complexities surrounding the relationship of two young men that fall in love. A compelling and evocative kaleidoscope of images will leave you visually moved and deep in thought. An energetic, human and erotic celebration of queer love and all its challenges in-between. From start to finish, a beautiful, sharply observed film.

Keen to know more about what inspired this thought-provoking portrait of the complexities of the modern queer experience? Book in for the Lonesome Q&A screening.

8:45 pm Friday 24 June (Q&A screening) and 2 pm Saturday 25 June| Tickets here
