Five reasons you need to head to the theatre before the end of the year
Posted on
Fancy a trip to the theatre this spring/summer? We have five suggestions.
Take advantage of the air conditioning and dim lighting to escape the heat as you’re transported to another world by amazing local theatre companies and actors, as well as some of the best touring shows in the country.
From a cult musical classic to a murder mystery, here are five shows to see before 2024 ends.
Briefs: Bite Club (Canberra Theatre Centre)
Because who doesn’t love a combination of music, circus, drag, burlesque, theatre, and comedy? Brisbane’s award-winning cult-cabaret mischief-makers are coming to Canberra, and you better believe you won’t want to miss this.
Why? Because the Briefs Factory is joining forces with much celebrated and sainted songbird Sahara Beck for three nights of chaotic fun – including a shotgun wedding and more. Grab your tickets before they sell out.
Thursday 21 until Saturday 23 November | Canberra Theatre Centre, Civic Square, London Circuit, City | Book here.
Bloody Murder (Canberra REP Theatre)
Full of twists, turns, and tangled tropes, this is one show that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Beginning as a classic British murder mystery, the cast of characters –pompous major, the imperious lady of the manor, the freeloading young nephew, the drunken fading actor, the innocent ingénue and the exotic lady-in-red – all have deadly secrets to spill.
But after yet another poisoning, Lady Somerset has had enough! Now the characters are rebelling against their author and its bloody murder. Go along to see who will have the last laugh.
Thursday 21 November until Saturday 7 December | Canberra REP Theatre, 3 Repertory Lane, Acton | Book here.
Eurydice (The Mill Theatre)
Know and love the classic myth of Orpheus? This show will turn it on its head.
Told through the eyes of its heroine – Eurydice – this inventive production will offer a fresh feminist lens on the ancient tale. Diving into the emotional and intellectual weight of being a woman whose life and voice have often been relegated to the shadows, audiences will explore themes of identity, agency, and memory through the eyes of Eurydice as she reclaims her agency in the face of loss and patriarchal expectations.
Wednesday 27 November until Saturday 14 December | Mill Theatre at Dairy Road, Fyshwick | Book here.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Q)
This exciting production promises laughter and romance, moonlit woods, love potions, and more than a few misunderstandings.
Transporting theatregoers to an enchanted forest this summer, Echo Theatre is bringing Shakespeare’s famous comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to the great outdoors. Starring some of the region’s finest and funniest actors, Shakespeare’s classic play will be presented in The Q’s new outdoor performance space: Aunty Louise Brown Park.
With no performance exactly the same, it will be an evening of outrageous fun for the whole family. Pack a picnic and make a night of it!
Friday 29 November until Sunday 15 December | Aunty Louise Brown Park, Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre | Book here.
Tick, Tick…Boom! (ACT Hub)
Before there was Andrew Garfield on the screen, there were other greats on the stage playing Jonathan Larson – and this is your chance for the true experience of Tick, Tick…Boom!
Three of Canberra’s best performers are taking the stage under the direction of Nikki Fitzgerald to bring Jonathan Larson’s semi-autobiographical musical to life, exploring the challenges of artistic ambition and personal fulfilment. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be singing along long into the night.
