Fly High at Googong this Father’s Day
Posted on
We’ve all heard the phrase “when pigs fly,” but this Father’s Day, there’s a fair chance you might just spot one in the sky.
And it won’t just be pigs—giant bunnies, whale sharks, stingrays and astronauts will be seen soaring at the annual Flying High in the Googong Sky kite festival, held at Rockley Oval, Googong.
The colourful free event attracts hundreds of kite flyers and spectators every year, with visitors encouraged to get in on the action by bringing their own kites to fly and a picnic rug to settle in.
Along with a visual feast, the festival will also feature music from a local DJ. Bring a picnic or buy a tasty lunch at the event; there will be a sausage sizzle, beer to treat Dad, and gourmet burgers by local chef Harish Chocha of Boss Burger.
After honing his skills as a chef on Sydney’s fine dining circuit, Harish has built a thriving business and his Boss Burgers gourmet food truck has been voted one of Canberra’s favourites.
On the day, Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie says Rockley Oval will turn into a sea of colour.
“Googong is well known for great community events and Flying High is one of our favourites,” Malcolm says. “There is something special about kites that brings out the kid in us all. We’re never quite sure what mythical creatures will appear on the day but it is sure to be a stunning spectacle.”
Located just 16km south-east of Parliament House in Canberra, and less than 6km south-east of Jerrabomberra, Googong is a rapidly growing township by leading Australian residential land developers Peet Limited and Mirvac. Over the next 15 years, it will be home for around 18,000 people, with 6,200 new homes built around a major town centre.
