From meeting UN delegates to travelling to Italy: CGGS opens a world of possibilities

From exploring historic sites in Italy to meeting United Nations delegates in the Netherlands, opportunities on a global scale await at Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS).
The School’s Experiential Learning program is an exciting part of its comprehensive co-curricular offering, Cygnus at CGGS. A calendar of trips and tours are offered from Year 5 to Year 12, designed to expand a student’s worldview by being immersed in a wide range of cultures, settings and on-the-ground activities.
Some of the program’s recent and planned highlights include travelling to Italy for a Latin and Ancient History Study Tour, visiting the Solomon Islands for a Community Service Immersion and touring Indonesia for a Science Research Expedition.
Year 12 student Tara, who has just returned from the Netherlands for the program’s United Nations Immersion and Modern History Tour, says the experience was invaluable.
“Participating in the United Nations Immersion Program was undoubtedly a lifechanging experience,” Tara says.
“Learning from global leaders in world-renowned institutions, such as the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, has broadened my world view, inspired actionable change and illuminated new pathways for my future endeavours.
“This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allowed me to receive an interactive education unlike any other, specifically tailored to careers in international relations, diplomacy and international law.”
Principal Mrs Terrie Jones says experiencing education in an unfamiliar setting introduces a fresh and engaging dimension to learning outside of the classroom.
“Memorable moments and deeper connection occur at camps, retreats, trips and tours, making the extensive program an integral part of the CGGS learning arc,” Terrie says.
“The Cygnus at CGGS schedule is filled with highly anticipated immersion experiences that support the real-world application of knowledge and skills, physical health, emotional intelligence, cultural literacy, self-awareness and social connection.”
On Wednesday 13 August, CGGS will hold its final whole-school Open Day of the year, where you can learn more about the School’s academic and experiential learning programs, the curriculum, pastoral care and enjoy authentic opportunities to meet staff and students while touring the ELC, Junior School and Senior School campuses.
The Open Day is also the best time to experience in-person the world-class facilities at CGGS which include an indoor heated swimming pool, gymnasiums, sports courts, purpose-built spaces for innovation, STEM and the performing arts, as well as its groundbreaking new multi-functional sports field. And set against the stunning backdrop of Red Hill is the breathtaking heritage-listed Boarding House, as well as other significant places and spaces that span the School’s enduring history.
As the School gears up to celebrate its Centenary next year, Terrie says there has never been a more exciting time to visit CGGS.
“There is certainly a special atmosphere at the moment, as we look to mark a century of inspired learning.”
