How you can celebrate Pride, creativity, and community at SpringOUT 2024

Posted on

SpringOUT 2024 brings Canberra to life with a vibrant mix of art, music, and inclusive events for all.

SpringOUT 2024, Canberra’s vibrant annual LGBTIQA+ pride festival, is once again embracing Canberra with an eclectic and inclusive lineup of events spanning arts, culture, sports, and community gatherings. Running throughout November, the festival offers something for everyone, regardless of whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in creative expressions, enjoy fun-filled celebrations, or reflect in nature.

The festival is launched with Fair Day, the flagship event set in the lush Glebe Park on Saturday 2 November.  Fair Day is a key celebration for Canberra’s LGBTIQA+ community. Over the years, it has become a cherished tradition, marking the beginning of the festival with a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere. Fair Day brings people together in a joyful, family-friendly setting, offering live entertainment, food trucks, stalls from local businesses and community groups, and a huge range of activities for all ages. It’s the heart of SpringOUT, embodying the spirit of pride and community that runs throughout the entire festival.

Art lovers will be spoiled for choice. Kaleidoscope III, an art exhibition that opened on 18 October at Belconnen Arts Centre and continues through November, showcases the diversity and creativity of queer artists. This exhibition, curated by Dionysus Soteris, presents a range of artistic expressions, from photography and sculpture to painting and installations, highlighting the unique perspectives of the LGBTIQA+ community.

For those who love music, don’t miss the George Michael Tribute Night on 2 November Cube Nightclub. This event promises an unforgettable evening of music dedicated to one of pop culture’s most iconic queer figures. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to his music, it’s the perfect opportunity to sing along to George Michael’s greatest hits in a lively, celebratory atmosphere.

Comedy is also a major part of SpringOUT, with Queer Comedy at Smith’s Alternative on Saturday 9 November bringing a host of comedians to the stage, offering sharp, witty, and hilarious performances. Comedy has always been a way to break down barriers, and this event will explore themes of identity, love, and the lived experience of being part of the LGBTIQA+ community in a way that’s both thought-provoking and deeply funny.

But if you’re looking for something a little more reflective, SpringOUT has got you covered. Pride in the Gardens at the Botanic Gardens on November 22, 23 and 24 offers a beautiful, guided journey through nature, where participants can enjoy the tranquillity of the gardens while sharing stories of community and connection. Similarly, Queer Reads, a literature event on Monday 18 November, offers an opportunity to engage with authors who explore queer narratives in their writing.

For sports enthusiasts, the Pride Rugby matches on Saturday 16 November offer a thrilling opportunity to celebrate diversity through athleticism and competition. These matches provide a welcoming space where players and spectators alike can witness the power of inclusion in sports. Rugby’s fast-paced, high-energy nature makes it exciting, while the event emphasises that diversity and acceptance are vital in all aspects of life, especially in traditionally competitive arenas like sports. Whether you’re on the field or in the stands, this event is about unity, respect, and pride in sport.

SpringOUT is a not-for-profit, member-based charity that hosts Canberra’s annual Pride Festival every November, along with events throughout the year. The organisation celebrates and uplifts the LGBTIQA+ community, enhancing visibility and fostering inclusivity through activations, celebrations, and events. Whether you’re part of the queer community, a supportive family member, or an ally, this year’s festival has something for everyone and everyone is welcome. Come join the celebration of pride, love, and identity at SpringOUT!
