Women in Media Canberra Networking Night: Democracy under threat? Unpacking mis/disinformation in Australia.

In the age of artificial intelligence, is Australia prepared to handle mis- and disinformation and protect its democracy?

Around the world, mis- and disinformation are shaping opinions with troubling effects on news reporting, voting behaviour, and democracies more broadly.

Earlier this year, Meta announced it would drop fact-checking altogether, drawing international criticism – including from Australia. With several elections just around the corner, concerns over mis- and disinformation, and how governments, news outlets, and social media platforms will manage these, are more pressing than ever.

Join Women in Media and IPAA ACT for a panel discussion and networking session at the National Press Club. Dr Nici Sweaney, founder of AI Her Way, Michelle Ainsworth, Skills and Knowledge Lead at the ABC and Churchill Trust Fellow, and Kate Driver, CEO of IPAA ACT, will discuss ground-breaking research on how international media organisations are exposing political misinformation, trust as a foundation of an enduring public sector, and the misuse artificial intelligence as a new challenge for democracy.

In addition to the panel discussion, there will be drinks, canapes, and an opportunity to connect with industry peers.
