Melbourne Cup at Thoroughbred Park – What to know before you go
Posted on
Can’t make it interstate for the Melbourne Cup this year? We’ve got the next best thing.
With eight races, DJs on course, live entertainment, Canberra Centre Fashions on the field (with the chance to win a trip to Paris) and the Melbourne Cup shown live on a super screen, Thoroughbred Park will have all the atmosphere of the main event, minus the travel. Ahead of the race that stops the nation, we’ve sussed out everything you need to know before you go.
WHAT TO DO
There will be eight live races on the day as well as bookies, bars, music and fashion. Thoroughbred Park marketing manager Briony Young says this year is all about ladies day, with drink specials from noon to 1pm. Best of all, the first 500 people through the gates will receive a HerCanberra First in Best Dressed pack consisting of complimentary T’Gallant wine vouchers, Luxewiks candle voucher, Cryospa Canberra voucher, Pure Zen Floatation voucher, a Victoria’s Models course discount voucher and a TAB voucher. “This year, Thoroughbred Park have upped the sophistication with corporate marquees and fashions on the field areas styled by professionals, so we can’t wait to see how Canberra Centre will style the fashions stage for Cup Day as the styling for Black Opal Stakes in March was nothing short of magnificent,” Briony says.
WHERE TO GO
While there will be plenty of seating and tables available at Thoroughbred Park on the day, it’s best to get in early for the best viewing areas which include the Acton Grandstand and picnic tables. You can book your tickets with Ticketek right up to the day or buy at the gate, but it is best to avoid the queue and plan ahead. The first local race will kick off at 11.15.
HOW TO GET THERE
The ACTION bus routes that include Flemington Road as part of the service will divert to the front of the racecourse on the day. “It’s a great way for your posse to travel from the major interchanges and they drop you right at the door,” Briony says. “Or why not go elite and catch a limo – Horsepower Limousines are our favourite. We also hear Canberra Helicopters have a few drop offs on the day!” Otherwise be prepared and book your Uber or taxi, or there are plenty of carparks where you can pick your car up the next day. Thoroughbred Park will also provide a free service back to the city interchange with a quick detour to their official after race day venue The Duxton in O’Connor. The police will be out in force so don’t drink and drive!
WHAT TO BRING
There is nothing like putting on your flats after a long race day, so if you have some that will squeeze into your bag then bring them to avoid the fashion faux pas of walking out the gate with your shoes in hand! “Sunscreen will be available on course at Beans Coffee Hut, and makeup touch ups available in the Betting Ring, so all you need is your key card, phone and a spritz of your favourite scent – easy!” says Briony.
