Noisy Futures Turns 10: a decade of empowering young musicians

Posted on

For a decade, Noisy Futures has been empowering young people in Canberra to make themselves heard in the music industry.

Now, the community arts organisation is turning 10 – and they’re throwing a party to celebrate.

Originally formed in 2015 as ‘Girls Rock! Canberra’ when the founder Chiara Grassia, attended a rock camp in America, Noisy Futures has been working tirelessly to increase the participation of girls (trans and cis), trans-boys, gender diverse young people and intersex young people in music.

Known for their Rock Camps – which have become an important stepping-stone in the local music industry – they’ve helped many young people achieve their dreams. And to mark the milestone, they’ll be bringing together the community that has grown alongside them.

“Noisy Futures has grown and accomplished so much in the past decade,” says Noisy Futures spokesperson, Jaida.

“We’ve held numerous rock camps and helped form countless new bands, put on some awesome fundraiser shows and worked with huge names in the music industry such as Courtney Barnett and Angie McMahon. Our community has grown bigger than we could have ever imagined!”.

Inviting the young people, artists, and mentors who have made Noisy Futures what it is today, the party is taking place on Sunday 19 April at Gang Gang Café & Bar.

Featuring live performances from emerging and established artists, including Ullah, Private Wives, and Dogtooth, alongside a keynote panel discussion, creative workshops, and market stalls, Jaida says that it will be a vibrant, inclusive gathering that reflects the strength and diversity of the creative sector.

“The panel will focus primarily on building safe and inclusive spaces in music, with expert opinions of real music industry professionals with hands-on experience. It will be facilitated by Music ACT, who are sure to ask the right questions and provide valuable constructive information,” Jaida explains.

“This event will be a true celebration of what we’ve achieved as an organisation over the past 10 years and provide us with an opportunity to properly reflect and celebrate with our community.”

Long known as a safe space for young people to discover their voice and unapologetically make some noise, Noisy Futures has evolved alongside the Australian music industry.

But as the Australian music industry has shifted, Noisy Futures has continued its commitment to helping people learn, create and collaborate through music. Jaida says the work they’ve done is worth celebrating.

“We’ve seen countless bands from rock camp take their music out into the real world and form bands making changes and waves in the music industry, such as Public Figures, Sesame Girl, Private Wives and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers.”

“The industry definitely has a way to go, but we’re glad we have played a part and continue to play our part in assuring music is fun, safe and accessible to everyone.”

Planning to hold more Rock Camps, workshops and shows in the future, one thing is for sure – Noisy Futures is ready to rock.

“This event is going to be a proper party inclusive of everyone! It’s the perfect way to spend your Sunday afternoon and is a guaranteed good time.”
