Seven events not to miss at DESIGN Canberra 2019

Design is in Canberra’s DNA.

Running from 4 – 24 November, DESIGN Canberra celebrates Canberra as a global city of creativity.

DESIGN Canberra experiments with new ideas and explores design through the concept of utopia. With over 100 events, exhibitions, talks, tours and activations we’ve rounded up the events not to be missed.

With installations, a design writing conference and exhibitions, there’s something for everyone.

UNDERCURRENT DESIGN MARKET

Want to get your hands on a unique gift for your loved one? Head along to the Undercurrent Design Market (22 – 24 November) to peruse delightful gifts from jewellery to textiles. Beat the Christmas rush and shop directly from the designers – sounds like the perfect idea to us.

MEDUSA BY PLASTIQUE FANTASTIQUE

An amazing 250 cubic metre installation, MEDUSA is a highlight of the festival that represents experimentation, collaboration and innovation and is an exciting expression of contemporary European design.

Find MEDUSA in Commonwealth Place during DESIGN Canberra (4-24 November).

CIVIC SQUARE: HOME TO DESIGN CANBERRA

Civic Square will be transformed to become home for DESIGN Canberra throughout November.

You’ll be able to participate in yoga, meditation and social running groups before kicking back and relaxing over the weekends with a glass of wine, entertainment and art.

LIVING ROOMS

Architecture, design and craft are the perfect combination for a unique home, homes that you can wander through as part of Living Rooms (10 and 17 November).

Take a peek at some of Canberra’s most iconic homes and explore living rooms that employ the festival’s concept of UTOPIA and Imagined Futures.

DESIGN AUCTION PARTY

Celebrate the first weekend of the festival with Design. Auction. Party (8 November) with an opening party of music, local wines, craft beer and more.

Plus bid at the festival’s annual design auction and you could take home a limited edition design piece.

OBJECT SUBJECT

If you’re a design enthusiast, you should head along to the inaugural Object Subject: 2019 National Design Writing Conference (7 – 9 November).

The conference provides an international platform for writers to address design as a positive change agent in society.

WOMEN IN VOGUE: CELEBRATING 60 YEARS IN AUSTRALIA

What do Kylie Minogue, Elle Macpherson and Canberra’s own acting superstar, Mia Wasikowska, have in common? They are all featured at Women in Vogue: Celebrating 60 years in Australia (11 October – 24 November) at the National Portrait Gallery.

Rare examples of archived magazines will be on show, from the early decades of publication through to bold photographs of women of the 21st century. To celebrate the opening of this exhibition, director of the gallery, Karen Quinlan, shared here insider take on everything from favourite masterpieces to best breakies to fuel your art adventures.
