Sink your teeth into these brand new shows

While we’re waiting for the return of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Brooklyn 99, here are some brand-new binge-worthy shows to keep you occupied.

Get in on the ground floor with these beauties.

You, Netflix

Everyone is talking about You, the Netflix show that hit screens late last year and took the idea of dating to a whole new (read: terrifying) level. Starring Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell, and newcomer Elizabeth Lail, You is a psychological thriller that follows book store manager Joe who becomes besotted with Guinevere when she walks into his store.

Joe turns out to have quite a history of obsession, manipulation, and stalking as he begins to obsessively follow Guinevere, researching her life, and then proceeds to insert himself into it, removing distractions along the way.

You is a disturbing take on modern day romance as, while the idea of “stalking” a person online and learning a bit about them before meeting them is a pretty normal thing to do before a date, it highlights the line between normalcy and obsession.

With a second season just announced and a new leading lady in the form of The Haunting of Hill House’s Victoria Pedretti, now is the time you start watching You (no pun intended).

The Umbrella Academy, Netflix

The Umbrella Academy has got that estranged-family-coming-home vibe of The Haunting of Hill House and the unique superhero take of Titans while still seamlessly paving its own path. It’s also hilarious.

The plot revolves around a disbanded group of superheroes who are reunited after their adoptive father – an eccentric loveless billionaire who trained the children to use their superpowers – dies and forces them to face their family once more. However, during the group’s grieving, they witness the return of their long lost brother ‘Number Five’, who has the ability to time travel and has returned from years in the future to report that the end of the world is in eight days.

The Umbrella Academy is fairly new to Netflix, but already is showing the star power to greenlight another season. Ellen Page headlines as Vanya – the lonely misfit within a group of misfits – with actual Misfits alum Robert Sheehan reprising his classic style of uncaring bad boy.

Newbie Aidan Gallagher does a fantastic 50s-style old man in his role as Number Five and even RnB sensation Mary J. Blige has a part as the mysterious agent out to get him.

It’s an awesome show, with epic action and fight scenes, and the mystery propels the show past the now dead-in-the-water Hell’s Kitchen shows like Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil.

Russian Doll, Netflix

Do you love Groundhog Day or the horror version of it Happy Death Day? What about Orange is the New Black? Well combined all of these ideas together and you have Russian Doll.

Russian Doll stars OITNB’s Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov who finds herself in a Groundhog Day-style time loop that has her dying every day and being forced to return to a party that’s being thrown in her honour on the same evening. Over eight darkly humorous episodes, Nadia tries to find her way out of the time loop, with hilarious and disturbing consequences.

Russian Doll is certainly not a new concept, but what is nowadays? Netflix has proven people want more and that is exactly what this show gives you – an exciting binge-worthy opportunity!

Sweetbitter, Stan

If you’re looking for high paced, food-centric drama than I have just the show for you – Sweetbitter. With a second season coming out in May, Sweetbitter focuses on the staff of a fast-paced fine dining restaurant in Manhattan circa 2006. With a touch of personal drama, romantic entanglements, and delicious looking food, Sweetbitter is the perfect kind of show to sit down to over a glass of red wine.

Heathers, Stan

I flipping loved Heathers. This ultra-updated version of the 1988 black comedy centres around the deaths of the cool kids just like the original, but it becomes so much more than that.

The hyper-coloured, cult-classic has similar vibes to shows like Scream Queens and Glee with its campy over-dramatic comedy, but don’t let that fool you. It also contains extremely dark scenes that some viewers may find distressing. You can’t pick Heathers, and that’s why I love it.

The characters are intense and melodramatic. There’s popular psycho Veronica Saywer (played by Grace Victoria Cox), the ultimately conniving Heather Chandler (played by Melanie Field) who runs the school with an iron-clad fist, the very dramatic dark and brooding lead JD (played by James Scully) and even features 80s icon Shannon Doherty as JD’s scrunchie wearing mother. They are all so intense and brooding that you don’t root for anyone, but also simultaneously do.
