Has anyone else been counting down the days?

This Monday, 10 March, there’s a public holiday to celebrate Canberra Day, and with plenty happening across the three days, it’s one of the most fun-filled long weekends on our calendars.

Whether you’re celebrating the public holiday by attending the Canberra Day festivities, making the most of the last nights of Enlighten, or have no plans so far, here’s what’s happening around town this long weekend.

Special Events and Festivals

A Date with Democracy

How are you and democracy going right now? Is it a rewarding romance? Or are things a bit complicated? This March, you can go on a Date with Democracy at Old Parliament House.

Inspired by the highs and lows of love and dating, at the free, all-ages event you can hit the dancefloor in King’s Hall, enjoy the historic Members’ Bar, or belt out your favourite love songs and break-up ballads at karaoke!

Lights! Canberra! Action!

Located in the open-air surrounds of the Senate Rose Garden, this is one film festival you shouldn’t miss. Shining a spotlight on local filmmaking talent, watch up-and-coming local filmmakers share their perspectives and interpretations of a yet-to-be-announced theme!

The National Zoo and Aquarium’s – Enlighten Exclusive Tour

Ever wanted to explore the National Zoo and Aquarium after dark? This engaging and educational tour will show you the wild side.

Saltbush

This March, your children will be taking centre stage in a new interactive performance at the Canberra Theatre Centre. Get excited for Saltbush – a magical show that invites young children to explore, play and dance through Australia’s diverse landscapes, immersing themselves in a unique storytelling experience.

Rooted in the wisdom of Australia’s First Nations cultures, Saltbush centres on the journey of two friends from different Aboriginal backgrounds as they cross Australia on foot. Bringing the beauty and mythology of the Australian landscape to life, you’ll want to book tickets for the whole family.

Free Women’s Day Traditional Yoga Class

As part of International Women’s Day celebrations, this free traditional yoga class invites women (including plus ones) to experience the depth of Hatha & Ashtanga Yoga, rooted in ancient practices. The session will blend structured asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork), and meditation to cultivate strength, balance, and focus.

Open to all women, the class is designed for all experience levels, whether beginners or seasoned practitioners. Participants can join in-person at Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon or online via a live-streamed session.

Women in Parliament Tours to celebrate International Women’s Day

Celebrate International Women’s Day by exploring the stories of remarkable women in Australian politics who broke barriers and made significant contributions to the nation’s political landscape.

Participants on the Women in Parliament Tour will learn about the trailblazing first females – Dame Enid Lyons and Dame Dorothy Tangney, and the first female Presiding Officers Joan Child AO and Margaret Reid AO.

The tour also explores a range of art works that reveal the inspiring stories of the women who shaped our democracy. Artwork of our first female Prime Minister the Hon Julia Gillard AC, and the first female Indigenous parliamentarians, Former Senator Nova Perris OAM and the Hon Linda Burney MP are highlights of the tour.

In this fascinating tour, visitors will delve into the incredible challenges trailblazing women faced and the significant impact they had on our Parliament.

Sunflower Maze

Looking for a fun family day out, a romantic countryside escape, or a picture-perfect adventure? Pop this one-of-a-kind event on your calendar. Alliance Française French Film Festival

Back for its 36th year, the Alliance Française French Film Festival will once again be treating local Francophile’s to the crème de la crème of contemporary French film from the last 12 months.

Constellations by Robin Fox

Constellations is an unmissable immersive audiovisual experience in which sound, light, and space collide.

Internationally recognised, Australian-based audiovisual artist Robin Fox will transform The Gallery at the NFSA into a splendour of sound and light, with sixty crystal balls suspended from the ceiling, acting as target points for white laser lights that explode and refract on impact – splitting into a colourful cornucopia of light and sound. This market is a community project run by the Rotary Club of Hall, the only rural Rotary Club in the ACT.

Celebrating Canberra women in Jazz

The Canberra Women’s Big Band is back for fabulous big-band music for a very special International Women’s Day.

Coming back together to showcase some of the finest local musicians, and celebrate composers from Canberra, Australia and around the world, you’ll experience some fantastic works from local hero Sally Greenaway, Miho Hazama, Patty Darling and others, and sing along to well-known hits from Beyonce, Carole King, Aretha Franklin, Dua Lipa and more.

All profits and fundraising from the raffle from the event will be donated to Karinya House.

Laying it all on the table by Hanla Art

A playful display by Canberra artist, Hannah Neville, exploring her signature love of native florals and backyard birds. Always enjoying a play on words, Hannah’s exhibition portrays a series of unlikely table settings and draws on bold colours and striking stripes to represent the courage of creatives when revealing their work.

Hannah’s inspiration derives primarily from her local surroundings; observations of stark white gums against lively green canopies and stormy summer skies or a happy encounter with a Crimson Rosella in her front yard, but her love of a pun or rhyme also features – ‘Lemon zest and sulfur crest’ anyone?

The Reckoning by Kate Stevens

Braidwood-based artist Kate Stevens presents a powerful series of paintings examining the impact of alleged war crimes committed by Australia’s Special Forces during the war in Afghanistan. Through her work, Stevens explores how these events shape Australian cultural identity, questioning the narratives we uphold and the voices we silence.

Soft Edges

Soft Edges is an exhibition by four artist friends who are interested in environmental and creative sustainability.

In.Plane.Site by Dörte Conroy consists of a number of small hard-edge paintings, full of different shapes, colours, and arrangements.

Pages from a Diary of a Weatherwatcher

‘What is the weather like here and now, in this place, and how am I experiencing this?’ That was the fundamental question for Di Broomhall’s body of work Pages from a Diary of a Weatherwatcher.

This diary of the weather in her eucalyptus garden spans a period of 12 months from March 2023 to March 2024. Priortising colour, light, atmosphere and sensation, this is one exhibition you need to see.

History: Solo Exhibition by Martyn Thompson

Head along to the Canberra Glassworks to see the stunning works of cross-disciplinary artist Martyn Thompson.

Reimagining his ceramic vessels in glass, blending nostalgia and modernity through a tactile, painterly approach, this exhibition has been curated by Aimee Frodsham, the exhibition integrates his new glasswork with textiles, furniture, and objects from his studio.

Waves of Kinship

This is a new photo-based work by Polish-born Kamberri/Canberra-based artist Marzena Wasikowska.

Inspired by fieldwork and studio meditations on the built environment, waterscapes and global warming, as well as her immediate family, works in this exhibition have been created with support from a Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation (CAPO) grant.

Celebrate Gungahlin: Young Voices

This exhibition features artworks and documentation from the 2024 Celebrate Gungahlin Festival.

Local artists Megan Daley and Pinal Maniar worked with children and their families to create masks, banners, and props for the inaugural festival parade. Showcasing the documentation of the process and the parade, as well as highlights from Our Town: A Celebrate Gungahlin Community Exhibition, head along to support over 100 young people who live, work or play in the Gungahlin region.

Escape. Control. Delete. by Kristie Watts

In Australia, more than one in three women have been physically and/or sexually assaulted. Every week a woman is murdered by her current or former partner. Escape Control Delete is a process and conceptual-based installation that makes the statistics of violence against women in Australia visible.

Each blacked-out key represents a woman in the community creating an unavoidable visual representation of words heard and reports read about the increasing statistics of women in Australia affected by abuse.

TILT by Alex Asch and Mariana del Castillo

This is the final exhibition in a two-year collaboration between artists Alex Asch and Mariana del Castillo.

Exploring ideas around identity, memory, belonging, and ownership, through colonisation, migration, and displacement the two artists enter the conversation from opposite ends. Head along to see it for yourself.

3000 days … and counting …

Esteemed Australian botanical artist Sharon Field is waging a personal protest against global warming. And in doing so, she is creating a monumental piece of art.

Setting herself a challenge to create a draw/painting for 3000 days on a series of scrolls, she is making Australia’s own version of the Bayeux Tapestry (the historic 11th Century tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of England and measuring approximately 68 metres).

Providing a visual record of the plants the planet is in danger of losing, you can see it at the Belconnen Arts Centre.

Neither Here Nor There by Liz Faul

Liz Faul was born in Canberra and grew up here. And that’s what inspires her work.

Conveying her feelings about Canberra and how it’s changed over the years, in this exhibition, she uses repeated motifs to express her memories of growing up here — the Burley Griffin map, the photographs of familiar places, and silhouettes of the family at different times. It combines painted papers, recycled printed materials, found papers and her illustrations on canvasses or boxes.

The Bald Archy Prize 2025

Get ready for Australia’s leading satirical art extravaganza, the Bald Archy Prize! Born in 1994 as a whimsical take that more serious competition, this prize throws open its canvas to artists of every stripe, inviting them to unleash their creativity in portrait paintings teeming with humour, dark satire, light comedy, or caricature.

Now, entering its 29th year in 2025, the Bald Archy Prize beckons artists to carry forward the rich tradition of revelling in laughter while basking in the beauty of art. The exhibition kicks off in Canberra before embarking on a tour across various venues in Eastern Australia, so make sure you don’t miss out!

Mint-60 (Royal Australian Mint)

As a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Royal Australian Mint, there is a display of never-before-seen objects from the national coin collection –  including Roxie, who was Australia’s first coin packing robot. On display until 12 May, so make sure you head in to check it out!

Saturday morning Yoga with Atmaraga Yoga

Interested in embarking on a yogic journey? Join Nandhini Nagaratnam on Saturday mornings for an hour long class focused on strength, flexibility, health and well-being.

Held in the Lennox Gardens, we dare you to name a better way to kick off the weekend than with a general-level yoga class by the lake. Riders will compete for awards including: Fanciest Woman, Fanciest Person in Solidarity, Best Dressed Bike and Best Decorated Helmet.

 This event will bring together women of all backgrounds to ride in style and call for a more cycling-friendly Canberra.

Join expert geologists from Geoscience Australia on a tour as they explore the rare phenomenon called an ‘Unconformity’ – an ancient rock formation where two rock masses, made millions of years apart, joined.

This tour only runs twice a year, so don’t miss out!

ACT FrogWatch is offering a unique opportunity to turn your outdoor space into a vibrant frog-friendly habitat with a series of hands-on workshops! Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast or simply curious about attracting local wildlife, there’s something you will love.

By the end of a workshop (and the show and tell session), you will have the knowledge and confidence to create your own frog habitat. It’s an exciting way to support the conservation of local species and help sustain our natural environment, one pond at a time. Hop to it!
