THE WHARF REVUE

“A fabulous night of nonsense and brilliance” Stagenoise

The Wharf Revue’s irresistible blend of vitriol and vaudeville returns. Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott turn their delightfully poisonous gaze on the antics of our indignitaries, past and present – but mostly present. Phillip Scott’s virtuosity on piano contributes to the feeling that this is “like Gilbert and Sullivan on speed.” (Stagenoise)

If there’s one thing that a federal election year brings, it’s a smorgasbord of satirical goodies. There’ll be minor party pies, red meat, blue cheese and don’t forget your greens. More than enough food for thought.

The Wharf Revue has become a Canberra institution. Its superbly delivered political satire gives the audience a chance to let off steam. We’ve all had a year of closely observing the truth that is stranger than fiction in Parliament House. Now, our not so revered leaders are centre stage: dancing, singing, wearing crazy wigs and misbehaving in a humourous tour de force. Don’t miss it – we all need a good laugh.

Happening from 13-24 September at Canberra Theatre Centre. For more information and to purchase tickets visit www.canberratheatrecentre.com.au.

FOUR STORIES

Four teachers, four artists, four people. Four Stories is an exhibition celebrating the artists’ creative energy as they work in four diverse media areas and styles in ceramics, textile design and photography. The support given to one another as colleagues has inspired these artists to create this dynamic, bold and exciting collection. It is these positive experiences that have driven their inspiration, motivation and passion to share their work with you.

Craig Edwards (Principal at Dickson College) creates wood-fired ceramic works that incorporate local materials in the clay and glaze. He is a full-time educator and part-time potter/ceramic artist who loves the expressive qualities of clay and glaze. His work investigates the human connection to place and is inspired by, and primarily uses, materials found on location at his family farm near Tullamore, NSW. His work attempts to capture the changing cycles of life, the sky and the red earth.

Shannon Kowalick (Photography/Media teacher at Gungahlin College) works in the field of Photography and Media. Through her photographic practice she likes to explore angular vantage points to create interesting compositions and uses post-production processes to manipulate and enhance her photographs. Whilst travelling through Europe, she was inspired by the bold and dynamic shapes, textures and form of architecture and landscape. Her collection highlights these elements through the use of strong contrast and monochromatic digital processing.

Kate Leedham (Visual Art/Ceramics teacher at Gungahlin College) is primarily a ceramicist who works in earthenware clay, either wheel throw/hand built or a mix of making techniques that includes mixed media. The surfaces of Kate’s works are often highly decorative and a strong use of colour is evident. In this exhibition the focus is on form, the relationship between form, function and the surface.

With a background in both Graphic and Textile Design, Keturah Manning (Graphic Design and Textiles teacher at Gungahlin College) is passionate about exploring the relationship between the two disciplines. Her work features bold graphic patterns and vibrant colour digitally printed onto fabric. ‘From little seeds’ explores the importance of each element and each process that contributes to the beauty of the final artwork.

Happening 8 – 18 September from 10am – 4pm

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 100 OBJECTS

Explore two million years of human history through treasured objets from the British Museum’s collection. Discover how people have shaped the world and, in turn, have been shaped by it.

A History of the World in 100 Objects from the British Museum will invite visitors to span the globe, to wonder at the remarkable achievements of people as they faced changing climates, new lands and shifting political arenas. It is an astonishing testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship.

This is a story told exclusively through the things people have made: objects of all kinds that have been admired and preserved, or used, broken and discarded. From stone to gold, clay to plastic, the objects range in size from tall Assyrian reliefs to a small, but exquisite, gold llama from Peru.

MYSTERIOUS EYES: ARTHUR BOYD PORTRAITS FROM 1945

A young man whose soft features betrayed the intensity of his own self-image, Arthur Boyd portrayed others with equally concentrated emotion. In this focus exhibition, Boyd’s self-portrait at age twenty-five is joined by his portraits of those around him. Through his eyes they are a reflection of the artist’s own state of mind.

Showing at the National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace, Parkes. Free entry.

TOUGH AND TENDER

Photographs by Warwick Baker, Larry Clark, Rozalind Drummond, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe and Collier Schorr reflect the formative identity of young adulthood and complexities of masculinity and gender, composed with sensitivity and candour in Tough and Tender. In ground-breaking performance art documented on video, Chris Burden’s physical trials strip back his own persona and the mythic ethos of manhood.

Specific works have been selected from broader oeuvres to create an atmosphere of revelation of subtle emotion and bodily sensation in portrait-related work.

Happening 15 Jul – 16 Oct at National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace, Parkes ACT. Entry is free, for more information visit www.portrait.gov.au

MICHAEL TAYLOR: A SURVEY 1963-2016

Michael Taylor is one of Australia’s best expressionist painters and one of our most significant contemporary artists, with a practice spanning 60 years. This exhibition is the first major survey of Taylor’s practice and includes paintings and drawings from six decades, sourced from major public and private collections in Australia.

He has lived in the Canberra region since 1971 – in Canberra, Bredbo, Michelago and Cooma. The landscape of the region has been a leitmotif in his ebullient, sensuous paintings, which oscillate between abstraction and representation. In Taylor’s painting every mark is electric with energy.

Showing until 2 October at Canberra Museum and Gallery,
176 London Circuit,
Canberra. Entry is free, for more information visit www.cmag.com.au

MEMORIES OF THE STRUGGLE

In 1994 Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president of South Africa. He embodied not only the hopes of his long-suffering people, but also the spirit of thousands of anti-apartheid supporters around the world who had worked tirelessly to rid the country of its racist laws.

Among these supporters were many Australians. From as early as 1950, trade unions, the government, sportsmen and women, musicians and many individuals took part in the fight for justice in South Africa. The anti-apartheid movement was diverse and complex, and made up of many different groups and voices.

While Old Parliament House functioned as the federal parliament, important discussions were held and decisions were made there on Australia’s response to the South African government’s discriminatory policy of apartheid. Three prime ministers—Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser and Bob Hawke—made key decisions that put pressure on the South African government to abolish apartheid.

This exhibition features the voices and memories of some of the Australians and South African expatriates who worked hard over decades to bring about the end of apartheid. They often faced bitter opposition, and some were jailed for their actions. Memories of the Struggle pays tribute to the dedication and commitment of everyone who took part in the movement.

The Museum of Australia Democracy is pleased to be a contributing partner to this important exhibition.

On exhibition now at the Museum of Australian Democracy, inside Old Parliament House, Parkes.
