It might have been the year where COVID locked us down the hardest, but Canberrans need not see out 2021 without a party (in a COVID-safe and socially-distanced fashion of course…)
The ACT Government has given the green light to a New Year’s Eve celebration later this month and it will provide Canberrans with a chance to reach out and support some small local businesses along the way.
In the first major event post-lockdown , residents are invited to celebrate the new year with a picnic along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin from 6pm, and enjoy fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.
But that’s just the start. Roving musicians and performers will entertain picnicking friends and families from 6-9pm around the lake in numerous locations adding colour, sound, and vibrancy to the last day of a very challenging year.
And in a boost to the hard-hit food and hospitality sector, Canberrans are encouraged to support local businesses by taking advantage of the special New Year’s Eve offers of ready-made picnic hampers, visiting the lakeside pop-up locations, or dining or staying in the city for New Year’s Eve.
If you only have eyes for pyrotechnics, there will be two synchronised fireworks displays to ring in the New Year, the first at 9pm and the second at midnight. The synchronised fireworks displays will be launched from barges in central, west, and east basin, meaning anyone on the lake shores will be able to enjoy the show while staying COVID safe.
There are additional vantage points at Black Mountain Nature Reserve, Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve and Red Hill Nature Reserve.
But in running these events, Events ACT is keen to ensure COVID-safe practices are adhered to. This includes using the CheckIn CBR app wherever it is present while viewing the fireworks. Attendees are also asked to ensure they spread out and avoid large crowds, keep 1.5m apart whenever possible, ensure healthy hygiene practices, stay home if unwell and get tested if any COVID-19 symptoms are experienced.
The event is produced by Events ACT, strategic partners National Capital Authority and the City Renewal Authority major partners Canberra FM and Canberra Centre.
