First Look: Shotclock Coffee House

Ex-WNBL basketballer Jessica Bibby has become a familiar face around Canberra with her iconic Shotclock espresso van.

Over the past two years since leaving professional sport, Jess has built her business to include four mobile vans serving up cafe-quality coffee at events, as well as a couple of permanent locations. Now, alongside fellow Canberra Capitals player Natalie Hurst, she’s taking the next step.

“It got to the point where I was running Shotclock by myself and it was completely booked out,” she explains. “Natalie, who I played with for years during my basketball career, was sort of getting to the last years of her career and she had seen what I had done and was interested in helping out. So I now I’ve got a bit of an offsider, and we decided to just do it and go ahead with a shopfront.”

Wedged in between the discount chemist and a stellar Vietnamese restaurant at the Macquarie shops, the bright yellow Shotclock Coffee House stands out. Jess hopes to provide a pit-stop for both locals and coffee fiends from all over Canberra.

“It’s a bit of a gem, really. The space has been a cafe in the past, but it was really basic on the inside so we took it over and gave it a real facelift. We’re doing the same stuff I’ve been doing out of the truck, I think it’s the coffee that’s always the star of the show but we also have muffins and vegan slices and we’re looking to expand the menu as we go.”

Jess has been flat out with the new venture as well as managing the mobile vans, and is excited to share all her hard work with her loyal customers. As it turns out, being a basketball pro and a full-time barista is not so different.

“You’ve got to have that ability to stay focused to make sure the service and the coffee is right. I’ve actually probably got a little fitter over the last couple of months, just lugging milk crates and setting everything up. One day last week I did seven straight hours of coffee, so the energy and endurance that I used in basketball an essential skill for me now.”
