10+ Vego-Friendly Places to Eat in Canberra

Posted on

Sick of the usual vegetarian options of salad, salad and more salad?

We’ve got you sorted with some of the best places in Canberra to get an exciting vego meal. Don’t worry; these cafés and restaurants will keep all your carnivore friends happy too.

Elk & Pea

Elk & Pea has a versatile Central American themed menu with bold flavour combinations and something for everyone. The cozy atmosphere and central location are bonuses. For dinner, try sharing the Hipster Platter. It’s a whole roasted broccoli and it’s seriously delicious.

The Elk & Pea Eating House, 21 Lonsdale St, Braddon

Stand By Me

Creating the perfect avocado on toast has become an art form, and no one does it better than Stand By Me. Stand By Me serves classic brunch with a twist and is a local favourite. It also doesn’t hurt that the food and space are 100% Instagram-worthy. Stand By Me, 1 Lyons Place, Lyons

Lazy May’s

Industrial meets comfy and traditional-style burgers meet vego delights at Lazy May’s. The coffee is great and there’s even a vegan burger on the menu with homemade tomato relish. Mmm. Lazy May’s, 41/1 Cowlishaw Street, Greenway

As all vegos know, an Asian menu is often the best option for meat-free but flavour packed food. Akiba goes above and beyond with heaps of bar snacks and noodles including my fave, the sweetcorn pancake with chilli caramel. And you can always grab a drink from their exotic cocktails list while you’re there.

Modern Japanese with a playful touch, Lilotang is the new kid on the block in Barton. While you may want to leave the robata to the carnivores, try the char-grilled cold eggplant with creamy sesame sauce for a smoky flavour explosion or some of the other delicate starters and salads.

Miss Vân’s

Public Service Announcement: Miss Vân’s, serves vegetarian bánh mì. I repeat, vegetarian bánh mì. Street food can be tricky territory for vegetarians, but Miss Vân’s has got you covered.

Double Shot

Double Shot is one of those rare cafés that specifically caters for vegos, which is lovely. Indulge with the brioche French toast at brekky (with Nutella, obviously) or add haloumi to any of the salads instead of meat for lunch. Double Shot, 7/18 Duff Pl, Deakin

Muse has food, wine and books. This is excellent in itself, and even better when there’s vego food! Muse is sophisticated with a home-grown feel and the revolving menu means there’s always something that makes the most of the seasonal veggies on offer.

Muse, 69 Canberra Ave, Kingston

Maple + Clove

Maple + Clove serves up dishes filled with everything you want and no nasties, that still manage to taste scrumptious. With alternative milk options and healthy juices, Maple + Clove’s food makes you feel good from the inside out. Try the Portobello mushroom burger if you’re feeling ravenous.

Maple + Clove, 7 Burbury Close, Barton

The Food Co-op

With a communal and casual vibe, The Food Co-Op is a great place to discover new healthy ingredients and stock up on hard to get staples like spices. The Food Co-op serves breakfast and cheap and vegan lunches every weekday which makes it a convenient alternative for food on the go.

The Food Co-op Shop & Café, 3 Kingsley St, New Acton

Sweet Bones

Last but definitely not least, Sweet Bones is Canberra’s go-to for everything vegan. The menu is just long enough to keep things interesting and features a (coconut) bacon cheeseburger and more baked goods than you thought possible. Drag along a carnivore and they might even be converted.
