COVID has slowed the world of hospitality, but for some venues, the accolades keep rolling…
AKIBA tonight took home the Australian Financial Review Top Restaurants People’s Choice Award for 2016 — the first time this award has been won by a Canberra restaurant.
Monster kitchen + bar has also been recognised, taking out the title of the ACT’s Best Restaurant.
“Our aim with AKIBA is to change the way people experience dining out, not only for Canberra – but also throughout Australia,” says owner Peter Harrington.
“Winning this award is testimony to AKIBA being a restaurant for the people… It is something we are extremely proud of, and the award is something Canberra should be proud of!”
Michael Harrington says he is humbled with the way Canberra has supported AKIBA.
“We are also surprised with the amount of customers who travel from Sydney and Melbourne saying that they came to Canberra just [to] eat at AKIBA!”
AKIBA is inspired by the informal and exciting atmosphere of the food halls or dining rooms throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with the food falling somewhere between Asian barbecue, raw bar and modern Dim Sum, and cocktails that have been described as both contemporary and creative.
The Harrington brothers have more plans to disrupt the dining scene with a new restaurant and bar being opened later in the year being kept a closely guarded secret.
