Picnics should be the ultimate in relaxed dining: short on structure, big on ‘hands-on’ deliciousness….
Cheese and charcuterie platters are just the ticket for lazy summer days in parks, backyards and balconies across Canberra.
But often the gloss of the ideal platter and the finished product is lost after it costs an arm and a leg to put a few small offerings on the plate–and it slides around the back of your car en route to Commonwealth Park as you attempt to enjoy Floriade.
The good news this week is the city’s chicest Italian provedore and wine bar Amici is taking the angst out of plattering.
Amici has just opened a new online store which allows you to select the most perfect platter for your appetite with the click of a mouse. From there it is just a short walk to Commonwealth Park if an alfresco meal is on the cards.
Cheese platters combine brie, gruyere, blue and goat cheese, served alongside Spanish quince past, Greek dried figs and house-made sourdough. A meat version includes salami, mortadella, jamón serrano, cornichons, chillies and bread. Or you can choose the mixed plate with a little of both.
If you are a cheese and charcuterie aficionado, you may want to select specifically which ingredient is on your platter. And adding on a bottle of wine to wash it all down with is as easy as an additional click.
Couples to large groups can all be catered to–just order one box or multiple–and corporate catering is available with free delivery within the 2601 postcode.
Given Amici’s prime position on Canberra’s light rail route along Northbourne Avenue (the gorgeous bar and deli is nestled under the elegant and heritage-listed arches of the historic Melbourne Building) the decision to establish a specialised take-out platter service was a no-brainer. It also means that if you want to BYO al fresco food to Floriade this month, you’re sorted.
Owned and operated by the clever crew at Lala Hospitality Group–the team behind Molly, 88mph, and the Highball Express–Amici promises to be as friendly as its name.
Not only can you grab a platter already artfully prepared in a recyclable cardboard box, but it also promises to be a convenient place to grab a few ingredients for an easy meal.
Stocking everything from fresh pasta and French butter to Oritz anchovies a huge range of Cuca canned fish as well as a wide glass cabinet with every variety of cheese, pate, charcuterie, and olive, Amici allows you to get a little inspired about preparing something a little gourmet when you get home.
But if you want a meal with minimal fuss, you can just grab any number of pre-packed salads–from a classic Caesar to a Moroccan chickpea and lentil or a lemon pepper and goji berry salmon salad. Don’t forget to also grab a deliciously creamy tiramisu on the way out.
Meanwhile, who would want to take-away when the long marble bar beckons?
Amici’s elegant fit-out feels so very continental. A silver Negroni fountain bubbles at one end of the bar, a pizza oven is at the other end–cranking out hand-stretched and classic Italian styles including the sublime garlic and mozzarella (what more does a pizza need?).
Cocktails are classically Italian and a “bottomless mimosa” promises two hours of the summery elixir for $36.
An extensive wine list also makes choosing hard and bottles can be bought to take-away, or opened at the table, depending on how the mood strikes you.
Lala Hospitality Group Sales and Marketing Director Jessica Arena said Amici was all about friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere and starting up a conversation with someone while you sit up at the bar.
“It’s just a beautiful light-filled and relaxing vibe, where you can grab something to go or sit and stay awhile. We’ve only been open a couple of months and we’re already seeing a really wide variety of customers coming together.”
With seating for 50 inside and 35 outside, Amici promises to be a good friend throughout summer and beyond.
