Back Lane Bird comes home to roost in Odgers Lane and Canberra’s late-night food scene just got a whole lot better

Odgers Lane has a new resident, and it’s staying up past your bedtime.
Back Lane Bird – the hole-in-the-wall chicken window tucked behind the Melbourne Building on Northbourne Avenue is now open!
It officially launches next Saturday 16 May, and the team behind it knows a thing or two about a good night out. Molly, VICE, Amici, Highball and 88mph all call the same CBD block home, and Back Lane Bird is the latest addition to the Lala Hospitality Group’s growing flock.
The concept is simple: A window. Fried chicken. 9 pm to 3 am, Thursday through Saturday. No fuss, no frills – just exactly what you want to be eating when a big night calls for something substantial.

The menu is perfect for late-night appetites: buttermilk fried chicken burgers with house-made mayo, chicken chilli burgers, buffalo wings, tenders with honey mustard, and chips with gravy or cheese.
“Canberra’s CBD late-night food offering has long been limited, leaving people with few quality options after a night out,” says Lorenzo Focarile, Director of Lala Hospitality Group.
“Back Lane Bird is our way of investing in the precinct – giving people another reason to come out, stay late, and make a night of it in the city.”
He’s not wrong. Anyone who’s found themselves wandering the CBD after midnight knows the options thin out fast.
To celebrate the official launch, the first 50 people to rock up from 11 pm on Saturday 16 May score a free buttermilk fried chicken burger. Get yourself to Odgers Lane and find the window.
