10+ of our favourite dishes in 2015

As we wrap up another year of culinary delight in the nation’s capital we thought we’d better try our hardest to narrow down our favourites from the past 12 months. Last year the awards went to lots of fusion dishes, groundbreaking food from new eateries and a few favourites of the healthier variety. In 2015, the list seems to be dominated by street food and outrageous desserts. What was your favourite dish for 2015?

Patissez’s FreakShake™

C’mon, it couldn’t be a ‘food of 2015’ article without a FreakShake™…I mean, how often do milkshakes go internationally viral and get their own trademark? It all started with the Muddy Pat, Nutty Pat, Nutella & Salty Pretzel and French Vanilla shakes, but Patissez hasn’t rested on their laurels. Since the original line up, they’ve continued to introduce unique flavours, such as the Freakin Nutz – a wicked Nutella FreakShake™ complete with upside-down cone, and The Bounty-ful Freak – a rim of coconut and Lindt white chocolate ganache with shredded coconut, a milky centre of crisp coconut and White choc Bounty shake, and topped with super light coconut chocolate mousse and Bounty pop-slide. You’re gonna need  bigger pair of jeans.

It’s a dish that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is the tastebuds—Umami-Jime Snapper Sashimi, Josephine Pear, Heirloom Tomato from Barton’s Lilotang. The snapper is cured in a combination of konbu, soy sauce and dashi, giving the umami flavour, and combined with sweet heirloom tomatoes and tart, crunchy pear.  A beautiful example of how pristine produce and a light touch can result in something truly delicious.

Is it breakfast or dessert? The Space Benedict may look like a Golden Gaytime with a melted ice cream slick, but it’s actually a pulled pork croquette with poached eggs, beetroot hollandaise, pork crackling brioche crumble and pea purée. It’s the creation of Rick De Marco, the face behind the eponymous Jamison café and pâtisserie that puts serious pressure on Adriano Zumbo, and now Woden’s Space Kitchen. Make sure you save room for dessert!

Sweet granola from Mocan and Green Grout

Toasted granola that’s sweet but not overwhelming sprinkled around a dollop of Elderflower labneh that’s floral and sweet but mellow at the same time. Topped with farm fresh seasonal berries (usually strawberries, blueberries and raspberries) with a dab or two of berry compote. Served with a little carafe of chilled milk that you can add as you see fit, it makes the perfect light, fresh, fruity start to the day with some substance.

‘The Greasy’ from Grease Monkey

An inevitable response to the kale-and-acai movement taking over the rest of Braddon, Grease Monkey opened its doors in 2015 to an influx of keen uni students, young professionals and burger enthuiasts keen for a no nonsense approach to American food. With only four other burgers on the menu, The Greasy is a classic American cheeseburger served with chips (at no extra cost) and best with one of Grease Monkey’s signature shakes that rotate flavours on a daily basis.

The Ultimate Ube Cake

Tthis cake is one of the most delicious things we’ve ever tasted. It’s light and fluffy but the buttercream and macaron pieces add an element of decadence. It looks super sweet but it’s really not, and because it’s made with ube (purple yam), it’s arguably a salad. Right?

Sweet delights from Frugii – just as good as the ice cream!

It’s easy to forget that Frugii only opened earlier this year, but we’re so glad it did. While many Canberrans have been fans of John Marshall’s ice cream creations for years, having a shopfront has allowed John and his team to branch out into more delicious delights. This includes choux pastries, parfaits and verrines. The menu changes all the time, which just gives you an excuse to keep going back.

One of the more recent additions to the street food stylings of Westside Acton Park, The Fish Can has the most extensive selection of baos in Canberra (including dessert ones). The bread is light and fluffy, the fillings are tasty, and the toppings, especially the crushed Szechuan peanuts, are really moreish. You can be good and have just one, or indulge in one of their packs of three or four—which are under $20.

We are complete suckers for butter and honey, particularly when it comes together with house made crumpets from Monster kitchen and bar. Yes, it’s a simple traditional dish, but these little babies are like little round, warm, buttery discs of complete happiness. They aren’t sweet, almost like a warm doughnut (without the sugar). Smother them in butter and Hotel Hotel honey and the combination is the perfect start to the morning.

2015 was the year that Canberra’s obsession with the cronut morphed into something a little more interesting. The cruffin from Ricardo’s Patisserie in Jamison had the lovely flaky, butteryness of a traditional croissant, but the shape of a donut, and was paired with nutella. But our favourite franken-croissant was the poissant – a croissant pancake – at Mitchell’s La Sable Pâtisserie. Available with either nutella, strawberries and vanilla ice cream, or aalted caramel, poached apple and vanilla ice cream, the poissant is a fun variation on pancakes for brunch.

Noodle Salad Bowl from Miss Van’s


We love being able to dine somewhere that not only has ‘naughty’ options on the menu, but some ‘nice’ options too.  Miss Van’s has become our go to when it comes to fresh and healthy – we absolutely love the fresh flavours of the noodle salad bowl and the generous serving means we can share (but often don’t)!

The bowl is full to the brim with thin rice noodles, bean shoots, cucumber, mint, coriander, lightly pickled vegetables, toasted peanuts and Vietnamese dressing. You then get to choose a topping of ginger soy chicken OR lemongrass, chilli tofu. We can’t go past the freshness, flavours and textures in this dish.
