Canberra’s newest brewery will open this Saturday—a first for this town centre

Posted on

This weekend, Gungahlin will get its first large-scale brewery with the arrival of Cypher Brewing Co.

When we first wrote about Cypher Brewing Co. back in October 2022, we shared that Cypher began as a twinkle in the eye of four friends who decided over beers one night (as one does) to open a brewery.

Now, Jeff Wilson Shipley, Rachelle Loosen, Benn Masters and Leo Valenzuela’s dream has come to fruition.

Located at 35 Hinder Street, Cypher is handily placed alongside the Light Rail line (light rail pub crawl, anyone?) and will serve both drinks and food in a relaxed atmosphere.

Those drinks will come courtesy of the talents of head brewer Matt Thiele, previously Capital Brewing Co., with the team envisioning a range of beers brewed on-site and available on-tap, including a rotating cast of seasonal brews and collaborations.

This Saturday 15 April at Cypher’s Grand Opening celebrations, patrons will be able to try six beers on tap, including a stout, Hazy, XPA and Red IPA, with everyone invited to come on down for a cheeky schooner or two.

“Canberra’s already got such a great brewing culture, and we’re excited to join it,” says Cypher CEO and Co-Founder Jeff Wilson Shipley. “We’re all about creating a relaxed space for Canberrans to drink great beer and relax with friends.”

You may have even tried a Cypher beer before, with the brewery popping up around town ahead of their bricks and mortar opening. They were at the National Multicultural Festival and Canberra Beer and Cider Festival with their beers also making a celebrity cameo on tap at Old Canberra Inn, Siren Bar and Frankies’s at Forde.

Jeff says the passionate team are excited to bring a new element to Gungahlin’s food and drink dcene.

“We’re a brewery by the people, for the people. We’re really here to give the people what they want,” says Jeff.

“We’re small enough to have the flexibility to tweak things as we go, so we’re really encouraging people to let us know what they want, whether it’s more hops, a summer brew, or even non-alcoholic options. We’re listening and keen to make it happen.”
