What you can’t miss during Canberra Wine Week 2018

Posted on

It’s that time of the year where we raise a glass to our delicious local wine region.

Over one huge week, the wine community of Canberra and surrounds will come together in celebration of that delicious drop. But we’re not just talking cellar door visits.

Canberra Wine Week 2018 offers something for everyone—from foodies to photographers to those wanting to learn more about how wine is physically made (and even blend a varietal or two themselves!). And, because wine is always better with food, there will be long table luncheons, a ‘liquid geography’ dinner, handmade chocolates, a tasting event with 60+ wines and more.

However, we couldn’t tell you about all of these (not in one article, anyway) so we’ve narrowed it down to 10 activities across a variety of formats and locations to give you a taste of what’s in store for you this April.

Gundog Grazing Dinner

Grazing, one of the Canberra region’s best-loved paddock to plate restaurants will be hosting an exclusive Gundog Estate wine dinner on Thursday 5 April that will be sure to delight Canberra foodies and winos alike.

Venture out to Grazing’s rustic Gundaroo location to enjoy a five-course modern Australian menu paired with winemaker Matt Burton’s award-winning wines.

Seating is limited and bookings are essential.

Thursday 5 April from 6 pm | Grazing, Cork Street, Gundaroo | $120 per person (all inclusive) or $85 per person (food only) | grazing.com.au

Tasting Event at NewActon

Kick off Wine Week 2018 by sampling a broad range of more than 60 Canberra district wines in the leafy A. Baker courtyard. Your ticket includes a tasting glass so you can make your way from stall to stall, discovering new favourites and learning more about the process behind the product from the makers themselves.

There will also be food available to purchase.

Saturday 7 April from 12 pm – 4 pm | The A. Baker Courtyard, NewActon | $20 pre-sale, $25 at the door | More information and tickets via Eventbrite

Meet the Winemaker – Steph Helm

Steph Helm is one of Canberra’s most interesting winemakers. Join her for a tour of the vineyard at the Vintner’s Daughter, followed by a private seated wine tasting and cheese platter in the winery. This is your chance to be face to face with someone who grew up in a legendary winemaking family (Helm Wines) and have all your wine related questions answered.

You’ll also have the exclusive opportunity to taste some of Steph’s first vintages (including her trophy winning 2015 Riesling) and perhaps even a wine she made back when she was a teenager.

Friday 6, Saturday 7, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 April| The Vintner’s Daughter, 5 Crisps Lane, Murrumbateman | $20 per person | Tickets and more information via Eventbrite

A. Baker Alternatives Wine Dinner

Head into the moody interiors of NewActon’s A. Baker to learn more about five of the Canberra District’s most innovative wineries—Tallagandra Hill, The Vintner’s Daughter, Dionysus, Sholto and Mount Majura. An interactive fine dining experience, A. Baker’s head chef will match a five-course meal to five unique varietals like Vermentino, Gewurtztraminer and Barbera.

Friday 6 April at 6 pm | A. Baker, Philip Law Street, NewActon | $120 | More information and tickets via Eventbrite

Sunrise photo walk at Lark Hill Winery

Love the vibrant colours and sloping lines of vineyards? Lark Hill Biodynamic Vineyard is giving photographers the opportunity to capture the sunrise over its vines across Canberra Wine Week. But that’s not all. The vineyard is also offering a bottle of wine as a prize for most popular photo (as voted via Instagram) from each session, as well as an overall prize for the week.

Monday 9, Wednesday 11, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 April from 5.30 – 7.30 am each day | Lark Hill Winery, 2 Joe Rocks Road, Bungendore | Limit of 10 places per session, phone 62381393 to register

Contentious Character

Indulge in a vintage flight of Contentious Character Shiraz or Riesling from 2001-2016 along with a food plate or two at their cellar door in Wamboin. Weather not looking too great? Why not curl up in their fireside lounge and listen to some tunes? If the sun is out, head to their deck to soak up the views.

Saturday 7, Sunday 8, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April | Contentious Character’s cellar door, 810 Norton Road, Wamboin | $55 | contentiouscharacter.com.au

Capital Wines art exhibition

Wine and art is a match made in heaven so why not swirl a choice drop in your glass as you peruse Dawn Elrington’s newest exhibition—Gems of Nature? A new native botanical exhibition, these gorgeous canvases are on show across the entire festival in the Kyeema Gallery, adjacent to Capital Wines winery and cellar door in the picturesque township of Hall.

5 -15 April | Kyeema Gallery at Capital Wines, 13 Gladstone Street, Hall | Free | capitalwines.com.au

Sparkling Glass

What is a good bottle of wine without the perfect vessel to enjoy it in? The Canberra Glassworks will be hosting a night of local sparkling wine at their iconic Kingston Foreshore location on Thursday 12 April to talk about the pairing of glass and bubbles.

There will be glass artists working until 8 pm too, so you can see the masters at work. As if you needed another reason to attend, all proceeds will be donated to Clare Holland House.

Thursday 12 April at 6 pm with glass artists working until 8 pm | Canberra Glassworks, Wentworth Avenue, Kingston Foreshore | $25 to attend with all proceeds being donated to Clare Holland House | Tickets via Eventbrite

McKellar Ridge Wine Muse Luncheon

Nothing is better than food and wine, except perhaps food and wine enjoyed in the chic surrounds of Muse. Specialising in wine, food and books (our dream combination), this special luncheon will feature a vertical tasting of McKellar Ridge’s Riesling and Pinot Noir, matched with a chef prepared menu.
