Chin Chin team to open new Med restaurant Carlotta in Canberra Centre

Foodies, prepare yourself for some news so hot we burnt our fingers typing this.

It has been revealed this morning that Lucas Restaurants – of Chin Chin, Baby, Kisumé, Chin Chin Sydney and Hawker Hall fame – will soon bring their signature flair to Canberra in the form of Mediterranean eatery Carlotta.

Seating 120 and located on Scotts Crossing (across from Anita Gelato) on Bunda Street the menu will focus on Mediterranean dishes with a design that nods to traditional Italian trattorias.

Having previously collaborated with Canberra Centre owners QIC in Melbourne, Chris Lucas, the acclaimed chef behind Lucas Restaurants, says it was a natural step to open in their Canberra precinct.

“QIC share my vision for working with likeminded creatives to develop exciting precincts with world-class restaurants and bars that set the benchmark for Australian design excellence. Our last collaboration at 80 Collins Street which saw the creation of the stunning Society Dining Room, Lillian Brasserie, and high octane Yakimono is a testament to our shared vision of growing cities through experiences.”

As for what diners can expect, Chris remains tight-lipped but hints at a focus on local produce and flavours.

“I’ve witnessed from afar how exciting and energetic the Canberra food scene has become, and I can’t wait to open Carlotta and work with the incredible array of local producers, growers and hospitality talent.”

It’s music to the ears of Canberrans who travel interstate to eat at Lucas Groups’ digs – and to those who believe Canberra is often overlooked when it comes to expanding beloved hospitality empires.

However, that may be changing. After all, Lucas Restaurants is the second big name to announce a Canberra outpost in the last few months (Chef Matt Moran’s Compa opening just weeks ago) and who knows who else might follow suit.

Carlotta is set to open this spring and we’ll bring you all the news as it comes.
