Did somebody say free bacon? But make it Aussie-grown as we celebrate International Bacon Day

Saturday 3 September marks International Bacon Day, as if we ever needed an excuse for a fry-up.
But this year, Aussie Pork suppliers, represented by Australian Pork Limited (APL) are reclaiming the day and encouraging shoppers to look for local when celebrating with a rasher or two.
Revelling all things bacon comes easy for APL, the organisation representing Australia’s pork production industry, which is worth over $5.2billion. But the Aussie industry is more than a little bit salty at how most buyers don’t know that the majority of bacon they buy here is actually made using imported meat.
“We really want Australian shoppers to be aware that the majority of ham and bacon they are buying in this country is made using imported pork,”said Margo Andrae, the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer.
To be sure that the bacon shoppers are buying is made from quality Australian pork, they should always check that the country-of-origin bar is at least 90 per cent full, look for the pink Australian Pork logo or simply ask when purchasing.
Ms Andrae adds, “our data shows more Australians are seeking out Aussie grown products than ever before. So we’re encouraging everyone to do the ‘Aussie check’ with the country-of-origin label or ask when you buy at the deli or butcher, to make sure the bacon is made using fresh Australian grown pork and support our local farmers.”
To highlight the leading quality standards used by Australian pork farmers, APL has joined forces with some of the best butchers around the country, including our very own Griffith Butchery, to give away free rashers on Saturday 3 September to celebrate local grown pork.
Shoppers just need to announce to the selected butchers “I want to take home that Aussie-grown bacon” to receive their complementary bacon treat.
We note it is perfect timing with Father’s Day the following day.
“We’re thrilled to hero our amazing farmers and butchers this National Bacon Day. Australia has an amazing pork production industry, employing over 36,000 people, many in regional and rural Australia,” said Ms Andrae.
It would be pig-headed not to get some pork on your fork in support of these local bacon heroes.
