Dobinsons comes to Belconnen

Posted on

Since opening its doors in Civic in 1994, Dobinsons has become somewhat of a local icon: think yellow umbrellas, thicker than thick toasties and those cakes.

And while many other cafes have joined it on the now-bustling Bunda Street strip, it remains a popular destination for sweet tooths and caffeine addicts alike, with tables filled to the brim at brunch and lunch almost every day.

Now those a little further north of the lake will get to share a slice of the Dobinsons pie, as the café expands to Westfield Belconnen.

Dobinsons’ manager Meaghan Leggett says the cafe will open a kiosk in the centre’s fresh food precinct opposite Coles from mid-December, a decision prompted by feedback from their northside devotees.

“Over the years, we have been hearing from customers outside the Civic region that they would love to frequent the store more often, but the city is too far out of the way to visit all the time, so we decided to take Dobinsons to them,” Meaghan says.

“We thought that Dobinsons Belconnen was good choice for expansion, as we have found that the demand there is very high.”

On the menu will be all the classics such as Dobinsons’ signature baked goods, sandwiches, sweet tarts, coffee, cold drinks, milkshakes, smoothies and juices.

The cakes in particular have developed a bit of a cult following over the years, and happily Meaghan assures us they will also be available for pick-up in Belconnen (always handy for last-minute Birthdays or Christmas shopping!).

“Dobinsons will also be starting new product line in 2018, which will also be featured in the Belconnen store,” she says.

Meaghan credits the success of Dobinsons to the culmination of five generations of hard-working and dedicated pastry chefs: a tradition which began in Northern New South Wales where the first Dobinsons bakery opened in the town of Kyogle over 125 years ago.

“We are still busy and while it’s difficult to keep up with constant competition and changing trends, food, coffee and good service with a reasonable price tag is what we love to provide, and we hope that it shows—we truly value each and every customer,” says Meaghan.

As for the most requested item on the menu? Surprisingly, that gong goes to the humble sausage roll.

“It’s still our most popular item, and it’s been the same since the beginning,” says Meaghan.
