“As far as makeovers go, it’s impressive.” We take a look at the new Woden Central at Canberra Southern Cross Club.
When walking into the Canberra Southern Cross Club’s newly renovated dining space in Phillip, Woden Central, don’t be surprised if you’re caught doing a double take.
That’s because it’s not so much a renovation as a complete overhaul.
Gone are the old carpets and chairs, and in their place is a light, cleverly multi-faceted space that instantly draws comparisons to Sydney’s Coogee Pavilion or The Fernery.
As far as makeovers go, it’s impressive: the airy new space features an abundance of natural light, warm tones, fresh plants, marbled and textured surfaces, cosy nooks, raised dining spaces and luxe lounges.
The dining offerings are now split into four distinct sections: The Clubhouse and Bar, Henry’s family dining section, The Café and The Patio.
Aimed at those seeking a more casual dining experience or a night out with friends, The Clubhouse and Bar offers a wide range of drinks, including 14 varieties of beer on tap and an extensive wine list.
There are large screens and comfortable nooks in front of the venue’s brand new fireplace. A range of casual eats are also available, including gourmet burgers, shared plates and pizza made from the new woodfired pizza oven—the centrepiece of the new dining space—with dough and sauces made in-house.
Perhaps the most striking transformation is Henry’s family dining section; which now features a stunning wall mural, pendant lighting and contemporary dining tables. The tables have views from the dining area directly into the enclosed kids soft play area—meaning adults can dine in (relative) peace. The kids’ menu also features a range of healthier choices designed to be nutritious and fun to eat, while the new games arcade and play area offers a great space for older children.
If you’re just after a catch-up cuppa with friends, The Café serves custom-made Stromlo Blend coffee roasted by Lonsdale Street Roaster and a range of light meals and desserts, including 18 flavours of handmade artisan gelati from the team at the Bermagui Gelati Clinic.
For those looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a more formal dining experience without the queues, The Patio is a light-filled space offering full table service at dinner times. Some of the new dishes on the menu include Moroccan spiced lamb shoulder, King Island smoked cheddar risotto and roast pumpkin and sage pappardelle.
General manager Matt Walshe says the new dining space has been extremely well received by their members and has put the club on the map as a dining destination.
“We’ve had so many people say it’s now a place you can spend the whole day in, and for groups it’s perfect,” he says.
“Our aim was to create a contemporary, light-filled and comfortable space for everyone—from families, young groups and older members—and I think we’ve achieved that.”
