Canberra’s Best Vegan Pizzas
Is there anyone in this world who doesn’t like pizza? The correct answer is no….
It’s the weekend! There’s no better time to get your friends and family together and head out for breakfast. But where to go? We’ve rounded up five of our favourite starts to the day – and a killer coffee experience – that we reckon you should try.
Local Press Cafe’s Green Pea Pancake may well be the most instagrammed dish in Canberra…and for good reason. It’s beautiful, it’s ‘on trend’, and it’s bloody tasty. Poached eggs, guacamole, corn, crushed feta, mint and chives dressed with house pomegranate-balsamic reduction, all on a green pea pancake which is probably unlike anything you’ve tasted before. You leave feeling all virtuous (not to mention full).

eighty/twenty food‘s common sense philosophy of ‘eat well 80 per cent of the time and indulge 20 per cent’ is a hit with me. The ’80’ Bowl: kale, watercress, rainbow chard, radish, cauliflower crumb, soft poached egg and grilled king trout, is one of my favourite breakfasts – and it’s good for you!

This is one you don’t even have to leave home to enjoy (once you’ve procured your muesli from The Muesli Bar, that is!) Simply choose your size, base and ingredients – the hardest part will be selecting just eight from the Amaranth puffs, bran straws, bran, psyllium husks, quinoa flakes, wheat germ, rice bran straws, coconut, toasted coconut, cinnamon, chia seeds, sesame seeds, linseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, toasted almonds, toasted buckwheat, currants, apricots, prunes, apples, dates, sultanas, figs, peaches, cranberries, goji berries and more. I like mine with banana, mixed berries and vanilla bean yoghurt. Yum.

You may have gathered that I have a bit of a thing for fish for breakfast. Monster Kitchen & Bar’s twist on the traditional hash brown combines silky Snowy River Trout with just the right amount of potato and fries the patty until crispy. The crunchy outside is the perfect complement to the runny yolk of the fried egg and the soft herbs. You’ll finish feeling sated but not over full – a great way to start the day.

Any fan of Eggs Benedict will tell you that they’re not all created equal. But we’ve found a new favourite… ONA on The Lawns in Manuka does a cracking good version, their Classic Eggs Benny with ham, two poached eggs and house-made hollandaise on sourdough celebrating everything that’s good about this dish. Perfectly poached eggs, ham off the bone and hollandaise with just the right amount of acidity. Have it with a side of avocado if that takes your fancy.

FYI – this article was published in February – we’re told that ONA has just rolled out a winter breakfast menu, without the Eggs Benny on it…
