Five casual gluten-free dining options in Canberra

Posted on

No gluten? No problem. Here are five laid-back eateries in Canberra serving delicious gluten-free food.

If you’re looking for a new casual dining destination that accommodates gluten-free dietary requirements, plenty of places in Canberra deliver flavour without compromise.

From Mediterranean feasts to late-night ramen cravings, these five casual hotspots are worth booking into.

This Mediterranean dining room and bar has been on the lips of locals (literally) since it opened, and it’s here that some amazing gluten-free food awaits. From the Antipasti to the pasta (which tastes as good as it sounds), there are plenty of flavour-packed gluten-free options to keep you full and happy.

Some examples? Spaghetti alla Norma, lamb ribs with sweet lime sauce, chargrilled Skull Island prawn with salsa verde and rustic shoestring fries with truffle aioli. A must try? The Pistachio Crème Brûlée.

Two Blind Mice (Curtin)

“Casual dining and not so casual food” is the motto of Two Blind Mice and they had us at gluten-free Coppa and Blue Cheese pizza with honey and almonds. But there’s more than that for gluten-free foodies. Along with the choice of gluten-free bases for their entire pizza menu, there are plenty of other options, from Beef Ossobuco Ragu to Slow Cooked Lamb Shank and Fried Cauliflower Salad. Hungry yet?

Ikigai Ramen (Gungahlin)

If the autumn weather has you craving something comforting, ramen is always a good idea. And with Canberra’s late-night ramen destination serving gluten-free goodness, you won’t be on a time crunch to find a good bowl.

While Ikigai’s Gyudon dish with braised beef brisket (pictured) is already gluten-free (and delicious), you can ask the staff for any of their ramen dishes to be made sans gluten – and it’s well worth it.

Clover Dining (City)

Italy meets Japan might sound like an unexpected combination but trust us when we say that Clover Dining makes it work – and it’s delicious. Combining Italian cuisine with the flavours of wafu, (a style of cooking rooted in Japanese flavours), here a majority of their á la carte menu is gluten-free.

Think: Gamberoni Alla Ariglia (grilled King Prawns with Arrabbiata sauce), pan-seared Hokkaido scallop with a cashew-jalapeño emulsion and dill oil and 200g Wagyu Sirloin with burnt garlic, Porcini butter and sesame seeds. It’s the flavour combo you never knew you needed.

With a menu and venue packed full of European flavours, the newest addition to Lonsdale Street is serving up more than good vibes (pun intended). Their shared plates menu brings together modern European/Australian tastes and – in good news – is almost entirely gluten-free.

From layered eggplant and zucchini caponata to burrata salad, golden cauliflower with pickles, goat’s curd and smoked paprika and a mouth-watering 1.4kg slow-cooked oyster-cut lamb shoulder with Persian fetta and fig glaze, you can thank us later.
