Five fancy but filling restaurants in Canberra

Posted on

When you go out for a special meal, the last thing you want is to leave hungry.

You’ve dressed up, made the reservation, savoured every beautifully plated course, and yet somehow find yourself eyeing the drive-through golden arches on the way home. It shouldn’t have to be a choice between sophistication and substance.

The good news? Canberra has plenty of restaurants that prove that fancy doesn’t have to mean tiny portions. From flame-grilled feasts to generous banquet menus, here are five fancy but filling restaurants in Canberra.

Terra (City)

Known for their flame-grilled feasts, Terra is always a good idea when looking for a filling and flavoursome meal. Serving a range of snacks, small plates, burgers and flame-grilled proteins (along with plenty of sides and desserts), the portions are perfectly sized and the atmosphere is relaxed despite the quality on your plate.

The beauty of Terra lies in its simplicity – choose whatever takes your fancy from the menu and know you’re in for something both flavoursome and filling.

If you’re hungry for something a little different, the Set Menu at Inka will leave you feeling genuinely satisfied and more than a little impressed. Bursting with Japanese-Peruvian flavours, the $98 or $140 per person options both include nine dishes that let the talented staff showcase their skills.

And from the ahuaca-molli (guacamole plantain chips) to their spiced chicken breast and a matcha cheesecake for dessert, you might need to pop the top button of your jeans, but it will be well worth it.

Ottoman (Barton)

Ottoman is something of a Canberra institution, but it also offers great value for money for foodies seeking a meal that won’t leave them wanting more.

Serving delicious Turkish food, the dishes are designed to share, but that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out. For $110 per person, the Banquet Menu comes with five entrees and five mains as well as Baklava, Lindt chocolate slice, and Turkish delight for dessert.

And if you’re not full after that…well, we can’t help you.

Serving French classics reimagined as modern cuisine, Les Bistronomes was named ACT Restaurant Of The Year for three consecutive years and Best European Restaurant Nationally in 2023 and 2024 – so it ticks the ‘fancy’ box. But is it filling? Yes.

You have three menu options to choose from at Les Bistronomes: the à la carte menu (which is four courses), a six-course dégustation for $140 per person and an eight-course dégustation for $160 per person.

No matter the occasion, nobody will leave this restaurant wanting more.

With a seasonal menu that celebrates the best produce of the region, at Beltana Farm, it’s all about hearty share plates. Preparing everything with produce from the farm (making it a literal farm-to-table experience), food is flavoursome and filling – meaning you won’t be uncomfortably full but certainly won’t leave hungry.

And with options like potato rosti with roasted garlic toum, chive, and parmesan to bay smoked lamb rump with burnt pear, mustard seed, and shishito pepper, the $120 per person tasting menu takes the pressure off choosing.

With dishes that feel both authentic and indulgent, the drive out to Pialligo will feel like part of the occasion.
