Five garden bars to grab the last of the sunshine

Posted on

Gosh summer was nice while it lasted, wasn’t it?

While the brief whiff of summer we had is gone, the weather is still warm(ish), and the best of Canberra’s autumn weather is here—but everyone knows as soon as April 25 hits, all bets are off and the ugg boots come out.

So, as a farewell to the warm weather (AKA the shortest summer Canberra has seen—thanks La Niña), here are five garden bars so you can enjoy the last of the beautiful weather before the cold sets in.

QT Garden sessions

Popping up on the QT deck every Sunday until April 3, a garden oasis awaits Rekorderlig Cider fans.

Spend the afternoon sitting and sipping on cocktails that use the iconic Strawberry-Lime Cider (think Swedish Punch with vodka, elderflower, fresh lime juice, cucumber, strawberries, mint and Rekorderlig and Strawberry Lime Spritz with Aperol and Rekorderlig) or order a Rekorderlig Blush Rose for the ultimate Sunday sesh in the sun.

There will also be a paddock-to-plate-inspired menu designed by Executive Head Chef Michael Box and DJs spinning live tunes that are sure to make the botanical-themed drinks taste even better.

1 London Cct, Canberra | Open Sunday 27 March and 3 April, 1- 4 pm | qthotels.com/canberra/offers/eat-drink/garden-sessions-on-the-qt-deck/

Extended until Tuesday 29 March, it’s your last chance to meet Canberra’s newest bar—a Secret Gin Garden in the Old Parliament House Courtyard. Located in a lush private garden, it’s the perfect place to relax as you enjoy the collaboration between Pialligo Estate and Underground Spirits.

Included in your ticket price is be a gin flight of three paired with canapes but you can also on wine, and beer and nibble on a tantalising selection of food.

Canapés anyone?

Armada Bar

It might not be in a garden but Armada Bar offers two things that make Friday nights a whole lot better: stunning water views with a glass of something cold.

Slinging cocktails, wines, and beers that are handpicked to be sipped outside and enjoyed in the fresh air, the drinks are paired with a tantalising menu that stretches beyond traditional bar snacks: think steamed bao buns with ginger soy eggplant, and smoked ricotta and popcorn chicken.

But the best part is the bar is covered with a large open-sided marquee to ensure the cocktails can flow even if the weather turns cold.

Grevillea Park, Menindee Drive, Barton | Open Friday 4:00pm until late, Saturday 11:30am until late and Sunday 11:30am until evening | theboathouse.restaurant/armada

Nestled among the stunning heritage gardens of Gorman House Arts Centre, Mint Garden Bar is the place to go if you’re searching for some fresh air and tranquility.

Offering a range of classic cocktails (made with fresh herbs that are grown amongst the tables themselves) and delicious pizzas as well as canapés and nibbles, it’s a beautiful alfresco setting to enjoy the best of Canberra’s weather under twinkling lights.

While this isn’t technically outside, Atrium Restaurant & Bar is set among a tropical atrium, which is pretty darn close.

Perfect for a sunny day that has a classic Canberra chill in the air (you know what I’m talking about), the lush greenery brings the best of summer back to life. Nibble on the all-day bar menu or dig into salads, burgers, pizzas…plus don’t forget dessert.
