Six things we desperately want to get into our mouths
Posted on
You open Instagram and right in front of you is the most decadent-looking drink/dessert/drink-dessert hybrid you’ve seen.
Your mouth waters. You hyperfixate on it for three days. You dream about it. You do mental gymnastics trying to work out how and when you can get this goodie into your mouth.
Why? Because a little treat can go a long way.
It’s no secret that the HerCanberra team eats out a lot – but even though we’re blessed to experience some amazing food, that doesn’t mean we don’t get that yearning to try something we see on social media. And it’s happened a lot to us recently.
So, we thought we would share our top picks – because sharing is caring. And we care deeply about sweet treats.
Here are six things we desperately want to get into our mouths.
The Choux Buns from Sandoochie

Sandoochie has made ‘Choux Bun Friday’ a thing, and it’s a concept we can get behind. Made fresh in-store, there’s a different flavour every week, with past offerings including lemon meringue (pictured) and Iced VoVo.
What choux waiting for?

Vietnamese Egg Coffee from MONSTER | Phin & St Bites

Even the non-coffee drinkers in the team are obsessing over this. Rich and velvety, this is a dark roast coffee, topped with whipped custard of egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, and sugar – kind of like a liquid tiramisu.
Served with crispy Vietnamese bread, it’s the perfect treat for a cold day.

The banana pancakes from A Bite to Eat

Banoffee pancakes served with vanilla mascarpone, fresh banana, sticky maple syrup and salty pretzels. Honestly, do we need to say more? We strongly feel that eating this would solve most of our problems.

Crème brûlée French toast from ONA Coffee House

If you need proof that brunch is edging closer to dessert territory, this is it. Thick-cut brioche topped with a crackly crème brûlée layer, served with silky custard, biscotti crumble, fresh berries, maple syrup and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream? Frankly, we’re not sure we’d have the self-control to order anything else.
The only question is whether to eat the ice cream first or save it until the very last bite. (We’re leaning towards both.)

Thai Milk Tea Bingsu from Don Japanese

Thai Milk Tea Bingsu at 2 am? Don’t mind if we do. This adorable dish is available as part of the late-night dessert menu at Don Japanese. Available from 9.30 pm until 2 am every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we would happily stay up past our bedtime to try this (and that’s saying something).

Literally any of the cinnamon scrolls from Smelly Buns

Since popping up on our Insta feeds, these cinnamon scrolls have been living rent-free in our heads. Why? Because you surely can’t have a bad day when you have one of these in your mouth.
Homemade and baked fresh, at the top of our ‘need to try’ list is the ube, pistachio and Biscoff.
