New places to eat in Canberra this winter

That’s right—we’re back with fresh local deliciousness, bay-bee!

Sink your teeth into the very latest on Canberra’s food scene. To be fair, we’ve listed them in alphabetical order.

We all love Canberra’s food scene, but please be COVID-safe when you venture out and take careful notice of each venue’s unique safety and hygiene regulations.

Don’t be complacent, just be patient!

Betty’s Burgers (Civic)

Originally from the sunny beaches of Noosa, Betty’s Burgers has restaurants in Brissie, Sydney, Melbourne—and now Canberra.

Located on Bunda Street in the Centre’s North Quarter, Betty’s is serving up seriously good looking burgers, fries, shakes and concretes.

With a burger menu that features all the usual suspects—classic beef cheeseburger, crispy chicken, mushroom burger—and an eclectic selection of fresh takes like the chicken supreme and a stack that combines the mushroom and cheeseburger, there’s something for everyone.

Sides include french fries, onion rings and salad—and if you’d like a drink with that, order up a thick shake—peanut butter, anyone?—or even a cheeky glass of wine or beer.

Capital Eatery (Civic)

Established by Melbourne’s successful Ambient Food Group—which has for 30 years been operating restaurants, delis, patisseries and cafes—Capital Eatery is located off Mort Street in the city, right next to Veteran’s Park.

Capital Eatery is open from 7 am to 4 pm daily, ensuring customers can get their first latte and their late-afternoon pastry—and everything else in between.

You can start with a cooked breakfast of eggs (Benedict or Florentine), or perhaps a bruschetta, spiced apple and sultana porridge, or chia pudding and then move on to the long counters full of wraps, sandwiches, rolls, bagels, fresh baked treats and a four-metre—yes, you read that correctly—salad bar chilling on the beautiful terrazzo benches.

Chargrill Harry’s Café (Barton)

Salads, roast meats, coffees and plenty of options for a delish lunch await you at Barton’s newest lunch spot—Chargrill Harry’s.

They also offer takeaway, so you can finally order a hearty salad for delivery. Bliss!

Chic Gourmet (Dickson)

We can’t get enough of Chic Gourmet‘s adorable animal-shaped buns and dumplings. Expect fusion-style Asian cuisine at this chic Dickson restaurant.

Holy crepes! Crepe Stop is a game-changer for Braddon’s snacking scene, with a creative collection of crepe-y goodness including sweet and savoury options.

Joining the new southside eat-street of Bradley Street in Woden, Dumpling Social is exactly what it says on the tin—dumpings and other Chinese traditional dishes enjoyed in the company of good friends.

Grease Monkey’s The Pits (Woden)

Southsiders, we feel your pain. Sometimes the trek to Civic for a Greasy feed is just a bridge too far—literally.

Luckily, that’s changed. The Pits is a sprawling outdoor street-food style pop-up that’s now dishing up Greasy goodness for eat-in and takeaway.

Located next to John McGrath Ford, just off Hindmarsh Drive in Phillip, the site includes covered outdoor seating complete with heaters, and even some arcade games to play while you wait.

Herbert’s at Evatt

The perfect spot for a brew and a burger in North Belco, Herbert’s at Evatt is offering just that—and a warm and welcoming community atmosphere.

With a list of local wines and an extensive pub-style food menu, Herbert’s looks perfect for families, mates, couples…the list goes on.

The Inn (Ainslie)

If you love the suburban groove of the Ainslie shops and the casual fun of a drink at Edgar’s, then your life is about to become considerably enriched.

Edgar’s has a big brother, The Inn, which has brought new eating and drinking options to the already-popular corner as well as an industrial-themed conference space with a courtyard bar and a more formal dining room upstairs.

And all of it with the most incredible views of Mount Ainslie and a vantage point above the quaint heritage rooftops that line the surrounding streets.

Kukula’s (Civic + ANU)

Bright veggies, flavoursome sauces and grilled meats take centre stage on Kukula’s menu of Ceylonese and Portuguese fusion.

This playfully named cafe and bar has taken up prime position on the Kingston Foreshore, slinging fine-dining inspired pub food at affordable prices with a welcoming, family atmosphere.

Masterbao Chinese and Malaysian Restaurant Canberra (City)

City West is levelling up with the addition of Masterbao which, as the name might suggest, is serving up fresh Chinese and Malaysian cuisine in the form of hot pots, noodle dishes and epic stuffed steamed buns.

My Mom’s Yangpyeong Haejanggook (Dickson)

An outpost of popular Melbourne restaurant My Mom’s Place AKA My Mom’s My Mom’s Yangpyeong Haejanggook, this Dickson bolthole is serving up delicious Korean staples such as haejanggook (a type of bone broth soup), kimchi pancake and, our personal favourite, fried chicken.

Ramen Daddy has gained a cult following from their random ramen pop-ups across Canberra—and now you can get it delivered to your place!

Okay, so these guys aren’t a ‘new place’, however, they have just opened for lunch after a decade of patrons pleading for day time dining.

Wildflour (Kingston)

Beloved Fyshwick baker-cafe Wildflour is expecting! A second, smaller Wildflour will open this October in Kingston, which will sell all the favourite take-away items.

It means that the customers in the inner south can expect access to a counter laden with fresh patisserie goods, pies, salads and ready-made-sandwiches all prepared fresh each day by French chef Romain Remy and his team who will continue to bake up a storm out of the Fyshwick kitchen.
