Four places to get a sweet gluten-free treat

Posted on

This is a rallying cry for gluten-free foodies: we’re no longer settling for subpar imitations of beloved baked goods.

‘Cause anyone with gluten intolerances or coeliac disease knows there’s nothing worse than a dry, crumbly, and tasteless treat. But luckily there’s been a surge of local businesses that are reimaging classic desserts and making them for those who want something sweet but can’t eat wheat (or rye, or barley) – and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference from the ‘real’ thing.

Here are four places in Canberra where you can indulge in a sweet gluten-free treat. You can thank us later.

Gluten-Free Café & Shoppe

Craving a croissant? What about a Danish? Or a Vanilla Slice? Gluten-Free Café & Shoppe is the place to go for all of your flaky pastry needs.

Baked fresh in-house daily, everything here is 100 percent gluten-free and darn delicious. Think: cakes, pastries, biscuits…the list literally goes on. And with an astonishing range of over 200 gluten-free products available for delivery and pick up, you can also stock up your home with all the sweet treats your heart desires.

Open seven days a week, 7 am – 3 pm | 23 Lathlain Street, Belconnen |  @glutenfreecafecanberra

Sweet Business Healthy Living

Gluten-free, sugar-free, keto, low carb, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, and vegan – Sweet Business Healthy Living ticks all the boxes.

Believing that treats should not only nourish the soul but also the body, everything is gluten-free – from chocolate cheesecakes to lemon curd tarts, and caramel slices (just to name a few mouth-watering options available). All made using a sugar substitute blend of natural low GI sugar, you won’t feel guilty going back for seconds.

Open five days a week. Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am – 2 pm | 10 Lathlain St, Belconnen | sweetbusinesshealthyliving.com.au

Perfect for cooling off on a hot day, at Florence Gelato you can enjoy Italian gelati in a gluten-free waffle cone. But that’s not all.

Here you’ll also find a simply jaw-dropping selection of layered traditional Italian cakes. Combining layers of mousse, gels, creams, and cake in classic Italian flavours such as lemon and strawberry and hazelnut, the cherry on top of these lavish creations is that they’re gluten-free. All we can say is: bellissimo.

Open six days a week. Wednesday to Friday, 10 am – 9 pm and Saturday to Sunday, 9 am – 9 pm | 10 Market Street, Belconnen | @florence.gelato

A gluten-free éclair? Talk about très magnifique. Created by Pastry Chef Kotesh, W Patisserie makes authentic French desserts with a very special choux dough. And from traditional éclairs with a crispy shell and smooth filling to dessert jars including hazelnut cheesecake and apple crumble, almost all the offerings have no gluten.

Usually found at The Little Burley Markets and Haig Park Village Markets (and available to order online) the team is currently taking a well-deserved break until Friday 1 March, but it’s worth keeping this sweet business in the back of your mind for when you’re craving light and airy, authentic French pastries!
