Is this precinct Canberra city’s best kept secret?

Posted on

For the last decade it’s been all about Braddon, but is it time to go west? City West, that is.

Braddon’s evolution from light industrial area into a vibrant eat street bursting with independent boutiques has seen it become the it girl of Canberra suburbs. But in recent years, City West has been slowly but surely emerging as a contender for the crown of cool.

Boasting everything from award-winning restaurants to garden bars and boutique hotels, the area connecting the city and NewActon is a destination in its own right.

But with ongoing construction in the area, you might not have been giving it the love it deserves.

As work ramps up on the Light Rail and the entire western side of London Circuit is closed to regular traffic, the businesses in the area may need a little extra attention as they manage reduced foot traffic and access challenges. Here are 10 things worth navigating road closures for!

10 things to discover in City West

No Name Lane

This intriguing eat street underneath the Mayfair apartments on Alinga Street and West Row packs a big foodie punch, from the hatted Terra to punchy Asian Baby Su and Jade Pan Malatang, through to The Goods’ nourishing wholefoods, Harvest’s top-notch coffee, and Mee’s iconic sushi.

Wild Panda

Double cheeseburger spring rolls, popcorn chicken, deep fried pork and chive dumplings…the only challenge about dining at Wild Panda will be deciding how many dishes you can fit on the table (and how quickly you can return).

We dined there recently and believe us when we say ‘arrive hungry’.

Saint Malo

This expansive corner precinct encapsulates Saint Malo Catering and Functions, a bespoke catering and events service.

Boasting an impressive portfolio of five unique event spaces, (including the elegant Alia, Saint Malo, Templo Theatre, Rito, and Saint Malo’s charming courtyard, Gardino), each space will be available for exclusive hire, offering unparalleled flexibility and sophistication and some of the most luxe settings for special events.

Crafting an experience that will leave a lasting impression, consider your next event sorted.

The Cupping Room

A concept café from Canberra’s very own international barista champion, Sasa Sestic, The Cupping Room delivers a steady stream of ONA coffees to the eager masses, alongside a thoughtful menu.

Roy Jnr

Opening for breakfast and lunch seven days a week, Roy Jr.’s menu boasts everything from a Blue Swimmer Crab Omelette to the classic Steak Frites and Soba Noodle bowl. Plus, its expansive business lounge setting makes it the perfect space to work from.

Two Before Ten Hobart Place

A little oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city, Two Before Ten’s Hobart Place venue offers the perfect place to escape and enjoy a stellar cup of coffee, and a tasty brekky or lunch.

Bashan

Sichuan restaurant Bashan brings authentic Chongqing spicy noodles to City West. Get your chopsticks ready to get stuck into dry noodles, pan-fried dumplings or their signature noodle soup.

Ramen O

Much-loved Ramen O’s city outpost dishes up famed bowls of brothy goodness. Located near The Cupping Room and Two Before 10 Hobart Place, it’s another delicious lunch break option for city workers.

88mph

If you feel the need to belt out your best Wham! song or practice your moonwalk, we know just the place. 88mph is THE place for karaoke in Canberra, and once you are warmed up, you can hit the dance floor and try to keep up with the flashing lights beneath your feet.

Little Steamer

Little Steamer is the perfect place for a delicious meal before heading home after a long day. Signature dishes include the Beijing roast duck pancakes and Shanghai pork dumplings (xiao long bao).
