This is one of my absolute favourite pasta recipes, and it’s a perfect dish for…
It’s Adiós to Honkytonks and Hola! to Loquita, as Civic’s Garema Place welcomes a new Mexican eatery from the team behind Akiba, Sage and Kokomo’s.
Just in time for the warmer weather, the latest offering from the HARVAC Group—Loquita—promises “experimental and elevated Mexican flavours with a strong emphasis on mezcal and tequila”. And with a name that literally translates to ‘crazy’ (or so Google Translate tells us—our Spanish is no buena), we’re excited to see what’s in store.
Located in Garema Place on the site of its predecessor Honkytonks, the space has been transformed into a refined mezcal bar and eatery, boasting interiors by Capezio Copeland.
Executive Chef James Viles (formerly of Bowral’s Biota) and Head Chef Brendan Hill (formerly of Aria and 12-Micron) say the Loquita menu will be a refreshing change from the fast-food Mexican chains which punctuate Canberra’s dining scene.
“It’s always exciting to bring regional Mexican flavours with modern ideas to a city we know will appreciate it,” Viles says.
“Diners can expect plates that adapt or entirely reinvent the genre, with a heavy focus on coal-fired cooking resulting in smoky flavours across the menu.”
The menu is brought to life by native ingredients that focus on the distinctive flavours of Mexico’s vibrant regions. An extensive range of mezcal tequila, Mexican beers and sangria are the perfect companion to the tacqueria-style food. From fresh corn tortillas to slow-cooked beef rib, spit-roast pork and tempura fish, the eatery is fueled with fiery flavours to satisfy every palate.
Loquita is soft-launching tonight, accepting walk-ins only for the first fortnight with the official opening mid-August.
