Summerside Up: cruising the Poachers Way in an all new BMW 2 Series Coupé!
Posted on
Mr HerCanberra and I recently took the chance to cruise around The Poachers Way as part of the Summerside Festival in a BMW 435i M Sport kindly lent to us by Rolfe Classic BMW. Oh, it’s a hard life. Yes, it is.
I don’t think it’s a secret that I really (really) like good food and wine…so the chance to sample some of our region’s best was too good to resist. Our itinerary took us from Lerida Estate Wines at Lake George, to Capital Wines and Grazing at Gundaroo, then on to Poachers Pantry and Robyn Rowe Chocolates in the Murrumbateman/Hall area…not only did we taste some superb food (and take home a bootful of wine) but we got to explore some parts of the countryside that we hadn’t driven before.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-JEYSwIiYva8/Uv0iVunF8EI/AAAAAAAAAsk/keWNa9moQg8/s144-c-o/IMG_6672.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979973636902481986″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6672.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
And that’s where the BMW came in – I usually drive a good, solid little Honda Civic and tend to be in the ‘whatever gets me from A to B’ camp when it comes to cars…but, honestly, it took literally just minutes behind the wheel of the 435i to awaken the ‘car chick’ in me. It is just too cool for words.
So, join Mr HerCanberra and I as we take you on our journey around The Poachers Way…and make sure you read to the end, where we tell you how you can win your very own Poachers Way/Rolfe Classic BMW roadtrip!
MR HERCANBERRA (HIM)
I am a BMW fan. Love them. There’s something about the “Ultimate Driving Machine” that just works for me. I’ll confess at the outset that I have a BMW – albeit an older one – a lovely black 335 coupé…which means that I was pretty happy when Amanda suggested the idea of a day out in a brand new BMW!
A quick history lesson for those that are interested. BMW has always made sedan and coupé versions of their cars. So a 3 Series could be bought with 2 doors or 4 doors. Same goes for the baby of the BMW range, the 1 Series.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-X8wbIPsL88g/Uv0n-He0o4I/AAAAAAAAA2M/U5BM7YhCyfg/s144-c-o/bimmer1.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979828331586434″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer1.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Fast forward to today and they’ve revised their naming so that a 3 Series coupé becomes a 4 Series. And likewise a 1 Series coupé becomes a 2 Series. Makes sense when you think about it!
So we’re lucky enough to have spent the day in a brand new 4 Series – a white 435i M sport – which is the top of the range. This one has been spec’d with all sorts of goodies including M brakes, sunroof, LED headlights. Note to wife – good job organising this trip!
ME (HER)
In my world, the idea of a whole day of eating and drinking (with a designated driver in a schmicko car) is pretty heavenly. We started our adventure at Lerida Estate Wines, about a 40 minute drive from our inner south home.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5yolAzf_YOI/Uv0n99M5-MI/AAAAAAAAA2U/jUnhQu1TAdw/s144-c-o/bimmer2.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979825572083906″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer2.jpg”pe2_img_align=”center” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_gal_align=”center” ]
Even though it’s freeway most of the time, it’s a pretty drive, particularly once you get to the Lake George area with its graceful wind turbines on one side and rocky slopes on the other. The time flew by, as Mr HerCanberra entertained me by showing me all the ‘cool bits’ of the BMW (I’ll let him wax lyrical about that).
HIM
OMG the gadgets in this thing are amazing! Even Amanda was impressed with the amount of technology they have squeezed into this thing!
The 435i has a Head-up display on the windscreen. Not only does it display the speed (as do some other cars) this one includes satellite navigation instructions, track lists from your iPhone, information about cruise control, the price of fish in China etc…
[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-cV2m_dSr80s/Uv0n_tuWCRI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/bi92Oa4ftwc/s144-c-o/bimmer7.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979855777106194″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer7.jpg”pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
The iDrive (BMW speak for the multimedia system) worked beautifully with Amanda’s iPhone, with audio playback via Bluetooth including album art on the display and the car able to use the data services on your phone to access web-based information on the screen…pity all she had on the playlist was Zumba music.
I never thought I would get excited about headlights (sad, I know) but even driving the 435i at night was a new experience thanks to LED headlights that track around corners as you turn. Pretty sweet.

Lerida Estate Wines is a gorgeous little winery, set on a hillside just off the Federal Highway. It’s popular with cyclists (as we found when we nearly mowed down a couple meandering across the exit road – perhaps post-wine tasting?) and was packed for brunch in the Barrel Room when we arrived.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HvS3OatLEvY/Uv0iXTQUldI/AAAAAAAAAtI/UjL2nkp5Bc0/s144-c-o/IMG_6680.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979973663918953938″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6680.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
John Caine gave us a bit of a taste of some of their wines, including their award winning pinot noirs and Shiraz Viognier, but I have to admit the Zenzi Rosato Frizzante was my favourite. A low-alcohol moscato-style wine, it’s a blend of Viognier and Pinot Gris with a small amount of Pinot Noir…and it’s just so yummy! Perfect for a summer’s night…
[pe2-image src=”http://lh4.ggpht.com/-_wV6fBVRdoI/Uv0iY_QbW-I/AAAAAAAAAt0/JrFF5JSjKvk/s144-c-o/IMG_6684.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979973692910427106″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6684.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Lerida also has a full size Petanque course onsite, and have mapped a great winery walk from their winery to Lake George Wines, so if you’re out for one of their Summerside Festival events, you can easily while away a day!
We had other places to go, and it was 35 degrees, so we gave the Petanque a swerve…but not before Mr HerCanberra had persuaded John to let him take a picture of the BMW amongst the wine vats. As you do.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zSvGISv9pKA/Uv0n9jYHyUI/AAAAAAAAA10/v2NESgBWbpE/s144-c-o/bimmer3.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979818639804738″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer3.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]

C’mon, it was a great shot! Let’s be honest, if you are going to drop a lot of coin on a car like this, you want it to look good. The 4 series doesn’t disappoint. This one is the M sport edition and drew plenty of admiring glances on the way out of Canberra.
The 4 series has only been available in Australia for a few months so there are still relatively few of them around, especially a top of the range like this one. The 2 series is due out soon (think a shrunken 4 series) so I’m waiting to see what that looks like – rumour is that it’s going to be something pretty special.
HER
As long as you’re driving, and I’m drinking, I’m up for it. Speaking of which, next stop was Gundaroo, for Capital Wines’ Oyster Bar. I have learnt that oysters are the way to Mr HerCanberra’s heart, so I figured this would keep my designated driver happy…I didn’t realise it would be such a win for me!
[pe2-image src=”http://lh4.ggpht.com/-uFFGoFUuHKk/Uv0iaH4eSGI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/Llq-VAYAUM4/s144-c-o/IMG_6706.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979973712405743714″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6706.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Their Epicurean Oyster Experience comprises a dozen oysters, done six ways, with six matching wines. There’s Oysters in the nude (a la natural) matched with Sauvignon blanc; Blue Nudes topped with just melted St Agur blue matched with riesling; Oysters topped with Eden smoked salmon & creme fraiche matched with chardonnay; Oysters with soy, mirin and Doodles Creek Wasabi Mayonnaise matched with rosè; ‘Carpet Bag’ Oyster (Bungendore Meats’ Herb and Garlic Sausage stuffed with an oyster with a Kyeema Vineyard Merlot; and Oysters Kilpatrick matched with sparkling shiraz.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wHkOKJHly08/Uv0_RuonUgI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/Af59FMujukQ/s144-c-o/IMG_6745.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980005454026592770″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6745.jpg”pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Knowing that we have a four course lunch immediately after, Mr HerCanberra and I decided to split the wines and oysters, and it was just the right amount. Mighty good and we took a few bottles of our fave drops home for good measure.
HIM
As Amanda says, I’m a big oyster fan…and these were fantastic. I think my favourite combination was the Soy and Mirin, but the Carpet Bag was something different and the Kilpatrick had a real kick to them. Really, really good – all of it.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-q8an4sbPpvE/Uv0_QtsKKKI/AAAAAAAAA28/i6ukK5yx9pI/s144-c-o/IMG_6742.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980005436593154210″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6742.jpg”pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Our next stop was a mere 60 second walk from Capital Wines (set in the old stables of the historic Royal Hotel, which Grazing now occupies), although I was rather disappointed we weren’t getting back in the car just yet.
We had Grazing’s Kitchen Garden Assiette, and it was everything you would expect from a menu centred around regional fare that promises to feature produce ‘plucked straight from their vegetable garden’.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-IAMYnkaaoXw/Uv0igeGy2oI/AAAAAAAAAv0/dbfK2m43BT4/s144-c-o/IMG_6719.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979973821450607234″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6719.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Oh, and there was wine matched to every course, too. You see why Amanda needed a designated driver.
HER
I was so looking forward to this meal – I’d been out to Grazing before, to chat with Chef Kurt Neumann before, but I had never eaten. This four-course meal probably made up for it!
[pe2-image src=”http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kFytmVu8ZO8/Uv0_VknkU7I/AAAAAAAAA4w/aG0pPBLoCho/s144-c-o/IMG_6757.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980005520057324466″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6757.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
On the menu was roast baby beetroot and green lentil salad with goat’s cheese fritter and fine garden herbs (above); followed by roast duck with scallop, green tomato relish and globe artichoke puree; then ox cheek with pumpkin, zucchini blossom and micro herbs. To finish, a stunning Garden Dessert Assiette of Lemon Balm Ice Cream, honey toffee fig, wattle seed panna cotta and pickled peach (below).
[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-VxA0kMl_hCY/Uv0_cKFfcHI/AAAAAAAAA6w/AwiVMFQ0EqY/s144-c-o/IMG_6774.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980005633194160242″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6774.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center”]
It was amazing. So fresh and flavoursome, and every course showed imagination and flair, and showcased the technical skill of Grazing’s kitchen. The Kitchen Garden Assiette is available for lunch Friday to Sunday, and dinner Thursday to Saturday throughout the Summerside Festival, and I’m tempted to go back for another taste of the region.
At this point, Mr HerCanberra bundled my wine-affected self into the Bimmer, and we were off for…gasp…more wine and food at Poachers Pantry.
HIM
Sweet … back behind the wheel! So, how does it drive? Fast. It’s got a 3.0L six cylinder with a twin-scroll turbo, no shortage of power here.
The best part was the gearbox – an eight speed with flappy paddles on the steering wheel. When it’s in sport mode and under full throttle, the car makes this brap noise with each gear change. Very nice.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Wug-A70GzHE/Uv0n-6TvZII/AAAAAAAAA2I/IyLQiTvoFNk/s144-c-o/bimmer4.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979841975313538″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer4.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
At this point I will mention that Amanda complained of vertigo like symptoms and asked me to stop driving like that. Which leads me to the brakes. They are blue with ‘M’ symbols on them and are the size of large dinner plates. Enough said.
HER
I never thought I would say this, but I may have had too much food and wine in a short period. But in the name of research, I pushed on to Poachers Pantry, where we enjoyed a smoked meat and matched wine tasting.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ScVmkqyV7gM/Uv1M5t7Z1rI/AAAAAAAAA8w/LRpbGfihajY/s144-c-o/IMG_6821.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980020434682894002″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6821.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
I’ve been a fan of Poachers’ meats for years, and am lucky that our local Shoprite regularly stocks the range…but I’d never had them matched with their Wily Trout Wines. We tried chicken breast with tarragon and lemon, ham, smoked duck breast, kangaroo prosciutto, and peppered beef sirloin matched with a selection of wines and, as had become custom, ended up ‘taking away’ some wine.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vorr8B0PB-0/Uv1M3WsjhAI/AAAAAAAAA78/jLi9NbfNn8w/s144-c-o/IMG_6802.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980020394086859778″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6802.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center”]
Poachers Pantry is a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon, and they’ve got some great events happening during the Summerside Festival: Twilight Tapas from 5pm until late every Friday during February (smoked meats matched with their Wily Trout wine to the sounds of live music); to lazy long lunches each Saturday and Sunday. I’m actually looking forward to getting back there with the kids, where they can wander around the lawn while we watch and sip a wine or two.
HIM
By this point I was getting fed up of watching her drink nice wine while I sipped water. So I was a bit excited about our final leg – Robyn Rowe’s Chocolat d’Or. It may look like a small shed by a dam, but step inside and you could be in a Parisian Chocolatier.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-gQtuMbCoiuY/Uv1M61fmKTI/AAAAAAAAA9M/GLFjYwKxHRQ/s144-c-o/IMG_6840.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980020453893613874″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6840.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
We decided to try the Chocolate Assiette with Sparkling Shiraz for her (yes, she found more wine), and a Chocolate Glace for me. We tried everything the Centenary Sea Salted Caramel, Hazelnut Praline, Orange Créme Truffle, Chilli Chocolate, Caramel Raspberry Framboise, Aramatoquie Poire, (Pear), and a chocolate cup filled with homemade ice cream with a chocolate ‘spoon’.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ObCoRWeQB-0/Uv1M7MLenzI/AAAAAAAAA9E/bVHwmQsfa6A/s144-c-o/IMG_6842.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5980020459983249202″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6842.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Given how much we had eaten, dinner would not be required…
HER
Robyn Rowe is the Canberra food industry’s Maggie Beer – she’s so sweet that you just want to hug her, and she’s so talented! I love her ‘Chocolat d’Or’ because not only do you get to sample her amazing chocolates, but you can see her at work in her kitchen.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-dRIe___xPTQ/Uv0iuKpLzhI/AAAAAAAAA0M/nYP2EyXj6Bo/s144-c-o/IMG_6861.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979974056744308242″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_6861.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
A selection of her decadent treats and a glass of local Jeir Creek Sparkling Shiraz was the perfect end to a brilliant day discovering just how good we have it in this region when it comes to food and wine. I was totally tempted to call the babysitter and book a room at Country Guesthouse Schnonegg just up the road! Alas, it was Sunday afternoon and the commitments of the coming work week called, so it was back into the BMW for our trip home.
HIM
Well this part is pretty predictable – I loved the 435i and was loathe to give back the keys! It’s a cracker of a car, a little bit more grown up than my 335. The BMW technology has come a long way over recent years (mine is a 2007 model with plenty of k’s on the clock) and it’s got me thinking about when to upgrade.
[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-D39TkAKGXRU/Uv0n-wN6zKI/AAAAAAAAA2E/a-iqN5tOUbs/s144-c-o/bimmer5.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/SummersideFestivalThePoachersWay#5979979839266540706″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”bimmer5.jpg” pe2_single_image_size=”w614″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]
Now to persuade Amanda that we need to swing another roadtrip when the all new BMW 2 Series Coupé lands. Honey, how about an M235i in white?
