Truffle Festival’s on at Westfield Belconnen

Canberrans looking to get their truffle fix will be in their element at Westfield Belconnen’s Truffle Festival this month.

The festival, to run on Saturday 23 July, follows Westfield Woden’s successful Truffle Festival and includes live cooking demonstrations from local chefs, wine tastings, truffle hunt demonstrations, local market stalls, food sampling, free kids activities and plenty of giveaways.

As Westfield Woden’s June event proved so popular, Westfield Belconnen representative Amanda Johnston says there will be extra stalls to cater to the crowds – perfect for those who missed out the first time.

“Chefs will be on hand cooking beautiful food using local produce,” Amanda says.

“These include truffle infused pasta, truffle mornay oysters, truffle panna cotta – to name a few. Get there early to ensure you can get a sample!”

Truffles are often seen as an inaccessible, hard to reach delicacy that can only be enjoyed occasionally, but organisers say the Truffle Festival gives Canberrans a unique opportunity to access and enjoy free tastings of truffle samples along with demonstrations by Canberra’s leading chefs and talks by local Black Winter Truffle growers.

Truffle growers will be appearing at the festival to talk about their produce and share information on the mysterious black truffle.

“The mysterious Black Truffles grow underground when exposed to very particular conditions in late summer, slowly maturing during autumn and are ready to harvest in winter,” says Amanda.

“They have a distinctive taste and are used to enhance flavours in a variety of dishes.

“Macenmist Black Truffle and Turalla Truffles will also be hosting truffle hunt demonstrations with their famous truffle dogs at 12pm and 3pm.”

Westfield retailers will also be offering samples and there will be a variety of activities for kids, including face painting, balloon bending and craft.

“Westfield Belconnen is really excited to be a part of an event that showcases Canberra’s beautiful local produce, our amazing retailers and offers our customers a unique experience,” Amanda says.

“This event will be fun for the whole family.”
