Canberra Day is always cause for celebration– not least of all because this year brings with it its very own unique drop: Walt ‘n’ Marion 2016 Shiraz.
You may be wondering exactly what that position entails.
In order to create Walt ‘n’ Marion 2016 Shiraz, Bernie visited Nick O’Leary’s winery for an afternoon of wine tasting, food and barrel sampling, helping to write the tasting notes for the finished product.
And now, we get to see what it looks like.
Bernie has worked with advertising agency Coordinate to design the wine label. It was during this initial meeting that the concept for the design was created.
Coordinate designer Logan Knight cites the relationship between Walter and Marion Burley as inspiration.
“A lot of Canberrans are probably unaware that Marion Mahony Griffin was also an architect (she was also the first employee of Frank Lloyd Wright). This was bought to my attention when we met with Bernie to begin the design process, so the design was about giving Walt & Marion equal weight in the design. The reflected ‘W’ and ‘M’ graphic became a good way to convey this.”
Given the wine is fittingly a Canberra District Shiraz, Bernie and Logan selected a rich berry tone set against a muted pink.
Logan says working with the competition winner was easy and collaborative.
“Bernie had a clear idea of the design direction of his label. Together we felt that it needed to reference the past history of Canberra but also look contemporary.”
This was achieved through the use of the original entry sketch that won the Federal Capital Design Competition in 1911.
If, like us, you’re excited to get your hands on a bottle or two of Walt ‘n’ Marion 2016 Shiraz, you’ll need to wait until Canberra Day, when 6,000 bottles will be on shelves across all Local Liquor, Liquor & Co and Supabarn stores in the ACT and NSW.
To celebrate, there will be an official launch at the Wine House at the Tradies Dickson on Monday 13 March. The lunch gives guests an opportunity to be the first members of the public to taste the wine and the chance to meet acclaimed winemaker, Nick O’Leary, in person. Not to mention, enjoy a two-course lunch including a Prawn and Avocado Timbal with Mixed Salad, Capsicum Emulsion and Lime Vinaigrette followed by Wagyu Beef Tenderloin served with Caramelised Shallots, Wild Mushroom, Asparagus and (of course) a Red Wine Jus –plus a delicious selection of cheeses.
To win one of three double passes to the launch, simply visit our Facebook page and comment on the post with this link, telling us in 25 words or fewer who you would take with you to lunch and why.
