Where to find some of Canberra’s best chips with gravy
Posted on
You’ve heard the great debates of the best chips in Canberra. Some like it thin, some like it thick and everyone likes it hot.
However, there is one unbeatable comfort food that is both steamy and greasy. We’re talking hot chips with gravy.
We’ve compiled our favourites, but there are many chips to try – and our hearts (and stomachs) are open to suggestions.
Kingsley’s (Various locations)
Thick, crinkle cut, some crispy and some fat. Now, these are the real deal. It would simply be an injustice to not include Canberra’s iconic Kingsley’s chips. That peppery tub of gravy never fails. Family sized always.
Open Monday to Sunday, 10:30 am – 9:30 pm | Various locations | kingsleyschicken.com
The G Spot (Gungahlin)
These chippies hit the spot. We recommend accompanying your meal with the “girls size” chips. Think: a regular cup size of skinny French fries sitting in a gorgeous pool of hot gravy. Grab a fork and sit outside on the G Spot crates (even in the freezing cold). It’s worth it for these bad boys.
Open Tuesday to Saturday, 6 pm – 11 pm | Gungahlin Drive, Ngunnawal | facebook.com/TheGspotCanberra
Johnos Takeaway (Mawson)
When I think of Johnos, it takes me back to being 15 and scavenging whatever gold coins I could find to muster up enough for a box of chips and gravy with a heaping of chicken salt. Honestly, there is no better reward for such a quest.
Open Monday to Saturday, 9 am – 8 pm | 1/118 Mawson Place, Mawson | facebook.com/p/Johnos-Takeaway-Pizza-Bar
Grease Monkeys (Braddon, Gungahlin, Woden and Belconnen)
The Greasy Chips alone are a memorable chip experience, with a special seasoning unlike anything you’ve had before. Recently I delved into pairing the mash and gravy with the chips and I haven’t looked back since. I think about these chips often, if you can’t tell.

Spitshack (Pialligo, Weston and Mitchell)
You can’t really go wrong with the Spitshack, chips and gravy combo. Gravy, thin, yet rich in taste. Chips not too skinny and not too fat. It’s just right.

Little Theo’s (Kambah)
From chiko rolls, potato scallops, pineapple fritters and more, Little Theo’s has fried foods from the gods. Obviously, there is one particular menu item that clogs our hearts most and that is the delectable chips and a tub of gravy goodness.
Open Tuesday and Wednesday 3 pm -8 pm, Thursday 11 am – 8 pm, Friday 11 am – 8:30 pm, Saturday 11:30 am – 8:30 am and Sunday 12 pm – 7:30 pm | Corner Boddington Crescent, Carleton Street, Kambah | facebook.com/littletheos
Victor’s (Queanbeyan)
Fat chip fans unite. Think generously salted, with the perfect gravy absorption ratio. Victor’s is a chip fanatic’s dreamboat.
