Yarralumla Turkish Halal Pide House’s long-awaited move and makeover revealed

Posted on

On any given day in Yarralumla you can perform a sociological experiment.

Stand outside the Turkish Halal Pide House and you can observe every strata of Canberra society walk through the doors. From young blokes in high-vis taking a break from their worksite to scoff a well-priced kebab, to mums and dads buying a banquet to feed the family, to political staffers sneaking down from the house for a pide fresh from the oven and a steady stream of diplomatic cars lining up for Ambassadors and embassy staff to procure what are arguably the city’s most succulent gozleme – this place is a veritable institution.

Spic and span, shiny, new and spacious. But there’s still going to be a queue….

For nearly 30 years, this very humble takeaway counter has been struggling to cope with demand and customers patiently learning how to tick their kebab packet with choices before waiting in a long line for their enormous fresh roll to make it out of the oven.

But this year sees a whole new look for the shopfront, which has moved next door to larger, new-look takeaway, with an expansive counter and a selection of tables both inside and out from which to enjoy a molten cheese-filled Peynirli (one of their best-selling fetta and mozzarella, spinach and vegetable mix pides) or their pillowy Kabak Mucveri (zucchini balls served with a yoghurt dipping sauce).

While the city’s Middle Eastern community is under no illusions as to how authentic this food is, there are burgers for the less adventurous, and vegan options for those who do not travel specifically to Yarralumla to seek out the Halal meats which are marinated before being cooked over an open flame.

The pide that brings half of Canberra to Yarralumla…

Maagement said while the new store is a massive step up from the original tiny counter which first set tongues wagging back in 1998 (including the gleaming stainless steel kitchen which replaced equipment dating back to the first kebab served), the menu remained unchanged and that the eatery worked hard to keep prices down despite rising ingredient costs. Many families have been reliably purchasing a banquet for $60 (see our main  image) and including a range of entrees, meats, seafoods, or vegetarian dishes, pide, dips and bread, knowing full well it will feed a hungry family of six and still deliver leftovers.

It’s also nice to have the room to sit down as opposed to huddling in the doorway waiting for the line to die down and having to grab your food and run.

Don’t forget dessert!

And even though the space is more than three times the space of the previous shop, the simple fact is that during peak pide-consuming hours, there’s still going to be a line-up.
