A Canberra Girl’s Guide to Uluwatu
Posted on
Dreaming of long, sunny days by the beach? Bali’s Uluwatu might just be the escape you need.
Known for stunning clifftop views, golden sunsets, beach clubs, and world-class surf breaks, Uluwatu has become a popular destination for those seeking that perfect mix of Balinese culture, dynamic nightlife, and serene natural surroundings. It’s a little bit more up-market that other areas and possibly a good destination for those who are new to the hustle and bustle of Bali. And with direct flights available from Canberra, why wouldn’t you make the most of it?
Here is our Canberra Girl’s Guide to Uluwatu, covering everything from where to eat to where to stay. But if you only take one thing away, make it this: watch out for the monkeys.
Wait, where is Uluwatu?
A coastal region of Bali, Indonesia, Uluwatu is located on the southwestern part of the Bukit Peninsula. One of the main areas of Bali, the closest airport to Uluwatu is Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. But for those coming straight from Denpasar airport, it’s easy to travel to Uluwatu via taxi or by rental scooter.
When travelling, keep in mind that traffic can cause long delays and you should plan accordingly.
How do I get around Uluwatu?
Good question! Because it is a cliffside town, it’s not very walkable (unless it’s a short distance). Rideshares like Grab and Gojek, taxis, or rental scooters will be your best option. Make sure to do some research into each to see what will suit you best!

DO
Visit the world-famous beaches
Loved for its stunning coastline, amazing surf spots, and gorgeous beaches, when it comes to a memorable coastal holiday, you’re spoilt for choice. Padang Padang (Thomas Beach), Bingin Beach and Dreamland (New Kuta Beach) should be at the top of your list, but all of them offer something completely different.
Bingin Beach is a surfer’s paradise, while Padang Padang Beach is known for its clear turquoise water, dramatic rock cliffs, and world-class surf break. You might also recognise it from Eat Pray Love!
Take a yoga class
Bali is home to some of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful wellness retreats, so you might as well make the most of it. Along with yoga classes, Alchemy Yoga & Meditation Centre also has a full recovery area with an ice bath and sauna, while Yoga @ The Istana hosts daily classes. Looking for something whole? Check out Happy Puppy Yoga Uluwatu and thank us later.
Create a piece of jewellery
If you want to create a special keepsake of your relaxing time at Uluwatu, a silver ring may be just the thing. Uluwatu Silver Class offers two-hour sessions where you create your own piece of jewellery from scratch. Under the careful supervision of the silversmiths, you heat, mould, file, shine, and design something just right for you, or someone worthy of your labours! It’s an engrossing process where you can go as simple or as dramatic (thanks to the semi-precious stones they have on offer to incorporate into your piece) as you please.
And after the physical labour of shining your piece to sparkling perfection, you can pull up a table at the adjoining Rolling Fork restaurant for some superb Italian food. Truly a memorable day to enjoy.
