Calling all Canberra mums in business

Posted on

Often we don’t know what we are capable of until we see someone else achieve it.

Therefore, the key to building or nurturing a successful business is by surrounding yourself with like-minded people.

International networking group, the Mums In Business Association (MIBA) is launching two child-friendly networking groups in the Canberra region to help empower and inspire mothers to grow and develop their businesses.

“I had my child late in life and running my own business was a perfect way to do what I love and have the flexibility to enjoy time with my daughter,” says Liz Walton, Fertility Expert and Coach. “But working for yourself can be lonely and most business networking groups aren’t child-friendly events.”

Liz has joined forces with three other local businesswomen, Jane Allen – personal image consultant, Davina Brown – health and wellness consultant, and Patricia Falcetta – special needs expert, to bring the MIBA to the region by opening two new networking groups – one in Gungahlin and one in Queanbeyan.

“The groups are designed so women with children feel welcome and are comfortable to discuss the joys and challenges of running a business and being a mum,” she says. “Networking groups are a great way to build your business, learn from expert guest speakers and connect and share with others.”

However, she notes that attendees don’t have to have young children or be mums at all to attend these events.

“My daughter is a young adult and has left home, but I’m involved because I wish a group like this existed when my daughter was young and I was starting up my personal stylist business,” says Jane.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, just over a third of Australia’s small businesses are now established and run by women.

“We’d like to see the exciting and diverse range of women in business in the Canberra region bump that percentage up,” says Liz.

MIBA Queanbeyan will be held from 10 am – 12 midday on Friday 22 March at the Queanbeyan Leagues Club. Guest speaker will be Liz Tilley, a corporate coach and mother of three, who will be speaking on Why Courageous Conversations are key to building your business.

The group is open to any women in business who would like to attend, not just mums.
