Do you work in communications or media? Want to make new connections? This event is for you.

If you work in communications and media, you know it can be tricky to connect with others in the industry. That’s where Women in Media Canberra’s networking nights come in. And there’s one on this Thursday!

Canberra is a city of communicators. It’s a diverse industry – we have ‘local’ journalists; those who work as producers and behind the scenes across print, broadcast and digital; the Press Gallery; PRs working in the public and private sectors; media advisors in Federal and Local government; and people like the HerCanberra team who fall into the category of ‘new media’. There are many, many ‘circles’…but it’s rare that we are given a chance to connect.

I’ve been working in the Canberra communications sector for 25 years and it’s always been a challenge to find a way to bring everyone together. That’s why, for the past 10 years, the HerCanberra team has been an active supporter of Women in Media Canberra.

Join our networking event on Thursday 6 March

This Thursday, our latest networking evening is a two-hour event including a panel discussion on the impact of mis/disinformation in an age of artificial intelligence, increased political polarisation and a move from fact-based information to, well, to “alternative” facts.

There’s also plenty of time set aside for questions, drinks, canapes, and an opportunity to connect with industry peers.

You can buy your tickets here.

Who’s on the panel?

The night will bring a panel of experts together to discuss the way forward including Dr Nici Sweaney, founder of AI Her Way, Michelle Ainsworth PSM, Skills and Knowledge Lead at the ABC and Churchill Trust Fellow, and Kate Driver, CEO of the Institute of Public Administration of Australia (ACT), who will discuss ground-breaking research on how international media organisations are exposing political misinformation, trust as a foundation of an enduring public sector, and the misuse artificial intelligence as a new challenge for democracy.

The discussion will be chaired by WiM Canberra committee member Claudine Ryan, who works at ABC International overseeing Screen projects for ABC Australia.

Who should attend?

The event is open to the public but will be particularly pertinent to journalists, public sector communications professionals, public sector policy experts working on media policy, elections and/or artificial intelligence, academics researching public trust, elections, and democracies and anyone interested in mis- and disinformation during elections.

And, despite what the name suggests, the event welcomes all genders!

This event is proudly supported by the Institute of Public Administration (IPAA) ACT.
